Cousin's,
Now we know who put John (TPM) Rogers in the 3rd VA Regit. Dr.
Clarence E. Carter found these records in the War Dept. before they were
transferred to the National Archives. This is a perfect example of NAMES THE
SAME, MUST BE OURS GENEALOGY. He offers no proof, other than the name, that
these men were the same person. Unfortunately this type of research is still
being published today.
These are the same records that I referred to in my message sent on 3
and 4 June this year. I went a bit farther trying to prove that they were the
same person. But all the information I found seemed to prove, to my
satisfaction, that Cpl. John Rogers of the 3rd VA Regiment and John (TPM)
Rogers were two entirely different individuals.
Lets look at the bible of Jesse L. Rogers that states John (TPM) fired
the shot that killed Ferguson. Until someone finds a copy of this bible so we
can investigate the inscriptions, it shouldn't be used as a source for proof.
If you want to know who fired the shot that killed Ferguson read page
275 of Draper's Kings Mountain And It Heroes. The first hand account of one
of Sevier's men named Gilleland states that he witnessed Robert Young's shot
that knocked Ferguson from his mount. A number of other sharpshooters from
Sevier's troops also claimed the honor of firing that fatal shot, among them
a man named Kusick. So it's a safe bet that the man who shot Ferguson was in
the Old Washington County, NC militia.
Jerry,
Apparently we don't interpret the first paragraph of the Official
Report of the Battle of King's Mountain, signed by William Campbell, Isaac
Shelby and Benj. Cleveland, the same. I read this to say that they felt
threatened by Ferguson's presence in the western part of the Carolinas. They
were afraid that Ferguson was about to invade the settlements on the Watauga.
So to protect their home and family, they went on a find and destroy mission
before he could cross the mountains. Had Ferguson stayed along the Carolina
coast John (TPM) might have had the opportunity to fire that fatal shot at
the only battle we can prove he was in, Guilford Courthouse.
The point I was trying to make when I said John (TPM) was not a
revolutionary, was that he didn't run all over Virginia or the Carolina's
trying to pick a fight with anyone. He was simply a member of the Montgomery
County Militia (citizens army)
who served when called, returning home to provide for his family when
released. I don't believe he traveled very far from home or if he did, stay
for very long. Siring 25 children in about 40 years can attest to that.
