Cousins,

I believe most of us will agree that we signed up to this list to obtain and
exchange information about our Rogers ancestors. However, I believe it is
equally important to delete or correct wrong information that has previously
been posted. With the wonders of email, the Internet, etc. it is very easy
to post information, but as we later find it to be incorrect, it is more
difficult to change or correct.

I am sure that you like me have seen things posted two or three years ago
that we now know is not correct. I would like to encourage you to notify the
list when you see a posting that you suspect is not correct. Here are some
examples that I've seen in various sites that is NOT correct or at least I
believe they are not correct:

- Benjamin (the Immigrant) was born in England in 1715. We don't
know where or when he was born. We know that he came to Virginia from
England, but he could have been born in any one of a number of ocuntries such
as Scotland, Ireland, or Wales for that matter. We know that he died in 1802
in Blount Co, TN. The birth date of 1715 is at best an estimate that is
probably not correct.

- The father of Benjamin (the Immigrant) was John Rogers. While it
is possible that Benjamin's father was named John, there is no evidence to
support this. The earliest thing we have o Benjamin is the crime that he
committed for which he was transported to Virginia in 1734.

- Benjamin (the Immigrant)'s wife's name was Martha. No, this is not
correct. I believe that a researcher got confused better Benjamin (the
Immigrant) and Benjamin (Jr) b. 1756. Benjamin (Jr) married Martha Brawley
24 Mar 1788 at Ft Chiswell, Montgomery (later Wythe) Co, VA. The only
reference to Benjamin (the Immigrant)'s wife that I am aware is the sale of
63 acres of land on Crippe Creek by Benjamin and his wife Lokey to Robert
Majors. This can be found in Mary Kegley's book, Early Adventures on the
Western Waters, Vol III, p.340. She further references Wythe Co, Deed Book
3, p.177.

- John (the Powder Maker) Rogers b. 1 Jun 1757 was a Captain in the
Rev War. While there was Captain John Rogers, in the Rev War, this was not
the John Rogers of Cripple Creek in what was then Montgomery Co, VA.

- John (TPM)'s son Jesse b. was a magistrate and was born in 1811.
There are several Jesse Rogers. The first one that I'm aware of was the son
of John (TPM). This Jesse was born 3 Mar 1791 probably in what became NW
Tennessee. He served as an enlisted man in the War of 1812 and shortly after
the war moved to Marion Co, TN and eventually to Greene Co, MO to join his
sons there.

There was a Jesse (Jesse Lafayette (Mut) Rogers) born 6 Oct 1811, but he was
not a magistrate and was not a son of John (TPM). This Jesse was the son of
Major David and was therefore the nephew of the Jesse born in 1791.

There was also a Jesse Rogers who was a magistrate. This was Jesse Lafeyette
Rogers born 22 Apr 1884. He was the gr-gr grandson of Dr Rev
William Rogers b. 1777 who was the brother of Major David and Jesse b. 1791.

Please let us know if you have comments or questions. Also feel free to tell
us about other information you have seen that you believe to be incorrect.

Jerry
