Early friends were whipped and even hung (remember Mary Dyer). As for
beheading, that was an execution retained for the nobility (remember King Charles I
and Mary Queen of Scots, etc). So unless William was an artistocrat, I don't
think he had lost his head. Unless he fell into the hands of an especially
goolish puritan witch-finder. By the way, was he still in NJ when he was allegedly
executed?
