Dear Friends,

I thought I would post my John Smith. He had sons William and Joseph, and I do not know of other children. As often happens, I know this John Smith by who he is not: he is not the John Smith who married Ann Pusey and (I also have Elizabeth Windle, not Dorothy?) Dorothy Windle and lived in London Grove, Chester Co.; he is not the John Smith who was a cordwainer of Burlington MM and who married Elizabeth Bartram. My John Smith was a miller, as was his son Joseph.

John Smith died before 1747. see marriage certificate of William Smith and Jane Underwood, Sadsbury MM, 29 Oct 1747, which identifies William as the son of John Smith deceased, also certificate of Joseph Smith and Rachel Beals, Warrington MM, York, PA 7th of 12th mo. 1752, which identifies father of Joseph Smith as John Smith, deceased. Walmer's book 100 Years at Warrington does not have death records before 1747; John Smith does not appear. FHLC does not have films of Warrington MM death records prior to 1747. Margaret B. Walmer, comp., 100 Years at Warrington: York County, Pennsylvania Quakers Marriages, Removals, Births & Deaths (Newberry, Warrington, Menallen, Huntington and York Meetings). Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, 1989, pp. 5-6 (certificate #11).

Sadsbury MM men's minutes, Lancaster Co.: 3rd day, 5th mo., 1738: John Smith's certificate produced from Goshon [sic] Monthly Meeting. See Wright, Sadsbury MM records. Also see film #389403, in which Gilbert Cope (Quaker researcher) notes that the first Monthly Meeting at Sadsbury was held on the 6th day of the 12th mo. 1737/8. Thus Goshen is presumably an older meeting.

Where can I access Warrington death records prior to 1747, and Goshen MM records prior to 1738?

Yours faithfully,
Margaret Robe Summitt
