James,

Many thanks for posting such a valuable collection of STOKES data. I am
sure that others will share my delight that you posted this information to
the Quaker-Roots list.

For the record, my husband is a direct descendant of the immigrants Thomas
Stokes and Mary Bernard as follows:

Thomas STOKES ( - 1720) & Mary BERNARD or BARNARD( - 1699)
| John STOKES (1675 - 1749) & Elizabeth GREEN
| | John STOKES Jr. (1713 - 24 Aug 1798) & Hannah STOGDELL (1718 - 16 Jun 1790)
| | | John STOKES (1747 - 1813) & Susanna NEWTON
| | | | Hannah STOKES ( - 14 Sep 1819) & Joshua PAUL (Jun 1774 - 9 Oct 1846)

[snip]

Much of our STOKES information comes from the Hallowell-Paul genealogy
(full citation on request).

I note that the Bible information contradicts the data in that genealogy
regarding the parents of Thomas Stokes. Although I have found the
genealogy generally reliable, this is certainly not the first possible
mistake. I would be most interested in learning if you have data from
additional sources regarding his parents.

Richard Haines in his "Genealogy of the Stokes Family Descended from Thomas
and Mary Stokes who Settled in Burlington County, N.J." does not even
attempt to name the parents of Thomas.

This is what the Hallowell-Paul genealogy states, on page 173:

"Thomas Stokes, of Lower Shadwell, son of Nathaniel and Ann Stokes, d.
7.11.1720, m. 10.30.1668, at Westbury Friends' Meeting, London, Eng., Mary
Bernard, daughter of John Bernard of Stepney, d. 1699.

"Thomas Stokes and family sailed for America in the ship 'Kent,' and
arrived in New Castle on the Delaware 6th month, 1677, proceeded to
Burlington, and settled on a tract of land containing 162 1/2 acres. The
deed for this land was from his brother John Stokes, of Wentworth Street,
London. To this land he gave the name of Stockingham. He was one of the
signers of the concessions and agreements of the proprietors of West
Jersey. His will, dated 10.13.1719, is recorded in Book 2, p. 138,
Trenton, N.J.

"Thomas and Mary (Bernard) Stokes had five children: Sarah, Mary, John,
Joseph, and Thomas."

Again, thanks for the posting.

Ruth
