Subject: Whiskey Rebellion Eastern PA Militia - Pike Co. units
Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2006 20:15:35 EDT
Which local Pike County militia units were called up by the PA government to
serve as an army for the Federal Government during the Whiskey Rebellion on
the frontier in 1793-94? Are there records for those units that went to
Western PA? Information on who the individuals were that actually served in
each of them. Were land grants given to the men who served in this operation as
payment for their service? Were these soldiers able to later file for
veterans aide, pensions or land grants? Are there any "experts" available, that
one could contact about this time period in the region?
A good resource to read to broadly understand the import and implications of
this event is a book by Thomas Slaughter called "The Whiskey Rebellion".
Great for background but not able to prove our family "claim" that our ancestors
were part of this army, who decided to stay in western PA when mustered out
there.
Is there a published local history available, which discusses the post
revolutionary early republic period [roughly 1782 to 1812] in Pike County? Where
might one go locally to research folks who lived in the Minisink region
during this specific era.
Thank you for insight and suggestions as well as answers.
[Since county lines were still moving at this particular time frame, I am
going to cross-post this query on the Monroe & Northhampton lists as well, so
please forgive if this request is seen elsewhere]
