Does anyone on the list have information or knowledge of the Cassidy
family in Pike County in the late 1800s ?
My ggparents, Michael Cassidy and Margaret (Hinds) Cassidy, and their
only son, Christopher, emigrated from Ireland in 1872 to settled in
Kingston, NY. They are listed as being there in an 1880 census.
Michael's and
Christopher's occupations are listed as "quarryman". Margaret's
occupation is listed as "keeping house".
For reasons not yet clear, the family moved to Shohola, PA, sometime
before 1888. It is assumed that Christopher, at least, found work as a
quarryman in the quarry of Valentine Engelhart, and where he met and
later married Mary Elizabeth Engelhart. They had 4 children in PA --
Stephan; Christopher, Jr.; Anne; and Valentine.
Christopher, Mary, and their four children returned to Kingston abt.
1902, where they had 5 more children -- Joseph; Luke; and triplets
Raymond, Ralph, and Richard. Presumably they returned to Kingston so
that Christopher and son, Valentine, could find work in the blue stone
quarries in the area.
Christopher, Mary, and family later moved to Bridgeport, CT, during WW1,
where, over the years, all died and are buried in St. Michael's
cemetery. Only Valentine remained behind in Kingston where he died in
1952.
There is no record of Michael or Margaret returning to Kingston with the
family. They leave no footprints after moving to Shohola, PA. It is
assumed that they stayed in Shohola or somewhere in Pike County where
they later died and were buried.
Michael and Margaret keep disappearing on me. If anyone can supply a
scrap of information about them, I'd be grateful.
Ray
