Subject: [PAGENWEB] Still looking for my "Pascoe in a haystack".
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2007 09:19:10 EST
Hi P.A. List - I am still looking for my relly " James Pascoe" There is a
feeling in the Colorado branch of his family that he left for P.A. sometime in
the early 1920s - But no one can say when ,where or how - Nor would any one
swear 100% to the fact that P.A. was his final destination . P.A. as you
know well - is not an easy state to start with nothing when trying to find
someone .
I have shown below a sort of potted history of what I have done in the past
and tried ( maybe clumbsily ) to show that thre were other James Pascoe's
around at the time that have heightened the difficulty of an already hard task .
In his culture methodism - mining and freemasonry were prevalent .
James was born July 03 1878 in Cleator Moor Cumberland England of Cornish
Parents-
John and Ellen Pascoe. I have all the English based data I need.
He left for the USA 1905 - NY Ellis Island records confirm.
Ship"s records show him and a pal called Davey were on their way to Bisbee
Arizona where Mr Davey had an Uncle.
James had another Brother " Benjamin " who also emigrated to the USA and
settled and married in "Victor" Colorado - again - I have much good info re Ben.
Ben's family- rumour is that James stayed with them for awhile before
marrying and moving to P.A. - exactly where in P.A. no one knows and I think
certainty on P.A. itself is less than 100%
P.A. is a big and complicated state to start searching if one does not even
know the county
.
Cannot find any Marriage record for James in Colorado or AZ..
I am still Hoping to find an obit for Ben in Colorado in which he just may
mention James our target.no success to date
Bisbee 1910 census shows a James Pascoe right birth year and another
possible candidate, BUT - There are at least two parallel James Pascoes around at
that time in that place and married ! James was single upon USA arriva - but
things change , I know !
The WW1 draft reg cards ( Ancestry.com ) show a James Pascoe in the Bisbee
area but with a next of kin that is not in our family - Thus , this James is
judged as not mine !
I will return to the WW! draft reg later !
The 1920 census again shows a James Pascoe in Grass Valley Nevada California
- I visited there this last year but found nothing more about him - indeed
the records show he came to there from Bisbee A.Z. but now divorced -
Remarkably ,I thiink this is our other James again, but cannot prove ii either way .
He is not there in the 1930 census ! Instinct tells me this is not my man!
The SSDI death index does not give a match !
The WW1 Draft reg cards shows another James Pascoe with the right year of
birth but the wrong month (September) and shows him as married in Allegheny
P.A., But again he is shown as USA born ! This prompts me to ask could these
records be wrong and what I.D did a registrant have to produce at the time in
terms of I.D.?
I am not a Member of Ancestry.com and have picked up much from it's free
areas and helpful people like your goodselves - If the family memory is right
and James did indeed move to P.A. then there are a few J Pascoes in P.A. in
the census - But How do I find the right one ? I am not saying the one in
Allegheny is he - Just that he could be !
I lived in the USA for about 10 years before returning to the U.K. so I am
reasonably familiar with the geography and topicality of the country - But I
just cannot nail this man down. r
I am sure I will no doubt think of other things when I stop writing — but if
anyone can help at all i would be grateful - happy New Year John Rice.
Cheshire England.
Please feel free to send this where you think wiser people than I can help -
John
