Subject: Albert Gauntner and Alice Krise - Need help!
Date: Thu, 9 Jun 2005 11:31:49 -0700 (Pacific Daylight Time)
Hi Listers,
I am having some problems with Albert Gauntner/Gantner who married Alice
Krise. Albert was born December 23, 1855, the son of Joseph Gauntner and
Barbara Koch.
Ledoux CVR, Vol. III, p. 228, #5144 Gantner, Albertus (Josephi/Barbara
Koch) b. 12-23 bp. 12-25-1855 gp: Thomas Eger & Catharina, his wife
PCL.
Alice was born August 24, 1854, the daughter of John Krise and Mary Ann
Neason.
Ledoux CVR, Vol. III, p. 349, #7677 Kreiss, Aliciam (Joanne/Maria Anna
Neason) b. 08-24 bp. 09-17-1854 gp: Jacobus Neason/Matilda Neason JBS
I have that they were married January 15, 1878 in St. Augustine. However,
census for 1880 shows that they would have been married before that as their
first child, Amelia was born about 1876.
1880 Census, Chest Twp, Cambria Co, PA (June)
p. 8, ED 205, Line 18
Gantner, Albert, age 24, farm laborer, b. Penn parents b. [not indicated]
(1856)
Alice, age 25, wife, keeps house, b. Penn, father b. Maryland, mother b.
Penn (1855)
Amelia, age 4, daughter, b. Penn (1876)
Rudolph, age 3, son, b. Penn (1877)
Ann, age 9/12, Aug, daughter, b. Penn (1879)
[Living near John and Mary Krise, Alice's parents]
The only children I have listed for them are the ones found in the 1880
census.
If Alice died in childbirth (as someone has stated), then she would have
died in 1879, if indeed Ann was her last child, not September 02, 1899.
In the 1900 census, I find that Albert has remarried to Lizzie. I figure
they were married about 1882, possible sooner. Rudolph is living with them
and then children from the new marriage?
1900 Census, Ashville, Dean Twp, Cambria Co, PA (June)
ED 100, Sheet 5A, Line 44
Gauntner, Albert, head, Dec 1856, age 43, m/age 25, b. Penn, parents b. Penn

William, son, July 1882, age 18, single, b. Penn
Thomas, son, May 1884, age 16, b. Penn
Albert, son, Sept 1886, age 13, b. Penn
Harman, son, Oct 1888, age 12, b. Penn
Rodgers, Lizzie, servant, June 1881, age 19, single, b. Penn, parents b.
Penn, servant
Although there are 5 living children listed for Lizzie and only four at home
she could have had a daughter who was already married or a son out on his
own.
By 1900, Amelia and Ann could already have married, so are not listed here.
I believe Ann married Samuel Eckenrode.
Anna M. Eckenrode
Of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Altoona, died at 9:15 a.m. yesterday, Aug.
22, 1973, at her home. She was born Aug. 17, 1879, at Ashville, a daughter
of Albert and Alice (Krise) Gauntner, and was married to Samuel Eckenrode,
who died in 1956, surviving are five children, Joseph S. of Altoona, Mrs.
Fay Gildea, Mrs. Alice Clement and Kenneth of San Diego, Calif., and Harold
of Dearborn, Mich., and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren
and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Eckenrode was member of St. Patrick's
Catholic church, San Diego. Interment will be made in San Diego.

I did not find Anna in the CA Death Index.
In the 1910 census, there is a lot of conflicting information.
1910 Census, Ashville Boro, Cambria Co, PA (April)
ED 109, Sheet 10A, Line 34
Gauntner, Albert, head, age 54, m/twice, m/15 yrs, b. Penn, parents b.
Germany, proprietor, hotel (1856)
Elizabeth, wife, age 58, m/twice, m/15 yrs, 1 child/1 living, b. Penn,
parents b. Penn (1852)
Albert M., son, age 24, single, b. Penn, laborer, odd jobs (1886)
Herman, son, age 22, single, b. Penn (1888)
First of all is the birth year of Elizabeth, which is minor. This census
confirms that Albert was married twice, as was Elizabeth. However, it
states she only had 1 child which lived. Could the other children, William,
Thomas, and Albert, have been born to Alice? If so, she would have died in
1886. And Herman would be the child of Lizzie.
By 1920, Albert is widowed and his son, Rudolph, is living with him.
1920 Census, Ashville Boro, Cambria Co, PA (March)
ED 131, Sheet 11A, Line 1
Gauntner, Albert, head, age 64, widowed, b. Penn, parents b. Germany, hotel
keeper, own house
Rhuddy, son, age 45, single, b. Penn, carpenter, house
By 1930, it looks as though Albert is again married. Her name could be
Leona, Leora, Louisa, but is listed as Leonce in the index.
1930 Census, Ashville Boro, Cambria Co, PA (April)
ED 4, Sheet 1A, Line 10
Gauntner, Albert, head, age 74, married, first married age 19, b. Penn,
parents b. Germany
Leouse? [possibly Louise?], wife, age 60, first married age 21, b. Penn,
parents b. Penn
McCully, Genevieve, daughter-in-law, age 24, single, b. Penn, parents b.
Penn
McCully, Leouse? M., daughter, age 4 2/12, b. Penn
Gauntner, Albert Jr, son, age 45, single, b. Penn, carpenter, house
I believe that Genevieve is probably the daughter of the new wife, Louise?.
And that the child is her daughter (she is listed as single probably
divorced)
So, my analysis:
Albert married Alice Krise and had 3 children, Amelia, Rudolph, and Anna M.
Alice died in 1879 and Albert remarries to Lizzie in 1881/82. The have four
more children, William, Thomas, Albert, and Herman. Lizzie died between
1920 and 1930 and Albert marries a third time to Louise (whatever).
I then have that Albert dies January 13, 1931 in Ashville unconfirmed.
Can anyone help me verify and make sense of Albert Gauntner and his
families?
Thanks so much.
