letter to father
Carlisle Barracks, June 20, 1864
Dear Father,
I seat myself to let you know that I am well hoping these few lines will
find you enjoying the same. I enlisted at Harrisburg on the 13th, I received
$200 local bounty and $25 government bounty. I sent $210 by Adams Express to
Altoona for you, I send the receipt in letter. There is about 30 men in our
company, they desert faster than they come in. I think we will stay here
until we are drilled and be sent off to the Second Regular Cavalry; they are
nearly all drafted men here, enlisted and get the bounty. I must draw my
letter to a close it is near drill time.

letter to brother
Carlisle Barracks, June 26, 1864
Dear Brother,
I seat myself to let you know that I am in good health hoping these few
lines may find you enjoying the same. I enlisted in Harrisburg on the 13th
of June. I recieved two hundred dollars local bounty and 25 dollars
government bounty. I sent $210 by express for father; I wrote a letter to
father on the 20th and received no answer yet. I think we will leave here
tomorrow, I do not not know where we will go to yet but I think it will be
to the Army of the Potomac. I would like to get a furlough home for a few
days but there is so many deserting that it would be impossible. This is a
beautiful place here they are building the barracks that the rebels burnt
last summer. I will write to you as soon as I get to the regiment. If you
will write soon send your letter to the Carlisle Barracks and let me know
whether father got the money that I expressed to him. I must draw my letter
to a close as it is getting late, give my love to all inquiring friends.
Yours truly,
Sylvester Conrad
letter to mother
Camp Stoneman, July 5th, 1864
Near Washington
Dear Mother,
I seat myself to let you know that I am well hoping these few lines may fine
you all well. We left Carlisle Barracks on last Monday and stopped at
Baltimore on Tuesday and got our dinner and then went on to Washington and
stayed all night at the Soldiers Rest and marched out to Camp Stoneman next
morning. Our camp is situated on a hill about six miles from Washington and
about one mile from Alexandria. We will stay here until we get our horses
and then be sent to the regiment. I enlisted at Harrisburg on the 13th of
June and joined the 5th United States Cavalry. I wrote two letters home
while at Carlisle Barracks, (one to father and one to ???) and received no
answer yet. I sent $210 to Altoona by Adams Express to father and I did not
hear whether he got it or not. Write soon and let me know whether father go
the money that I sent to him. I would like if you send me some postage
stamps, some writing paper and envelopes.
Yours truly,
Sylvester

letter from mother to lawyer
P. J. Lockwood, Esq.
Dear Sir,
Enclosed find copies of three letters from my son Peter Sylvester Conrad,
they being the only evidence I have of his career in the army, except I
heard that he died in a prison at Danville, Virginia and his cousin, Frank
Conrad once met him on the march before the close of the war. I believe he
was captured and made a prisoner before he reached the regiment for which he
enlisted. I sent a letter and something's to him as directed to the regiment
and after a time the letter was returned to me saying that there was no such
man in the regiment. My husband died March 31, 1882 and I have one son
living with me now who is sickly and I am getting old and dependent and I
think I might be placed on the list of mothers who gave up their sons for
the cause of their country. My friends say I ought to have a pension as well
as many others. You being recommended to me as a good person to ??? up my
claim on my son's record. I send what evidence I have to you hoping that you
will succeed in getting a pension and back pay if there is any for God knows
I will need it. Hoping that you will succeed is the prayers of
Mrs. Ann Conrad
