This suggestion does come up now and again, and, each time, Diann
and I discuss the idea. There are numerous pros and cons about doing
it. However, to us, the cons seem to outweigh the pros:

Some days, only one or two things get posted to the boards; other
days, it can be as many as 15 - 20. That means you would get an additional
15 to 20 emails on that day. For alot of people, that's too much extra mail.

The boards aren't "protected" like the list is. Anyone can post
to the boards; you have to be a member to post to the list. Since the
boards aren't protected, they can, and frequently are, hit by spammers
selling all sorts of things that aren't in the least related to
genealogy. We all get enough of those without adding more to our inboxes.

But the biggest reason is that when people get an email, they tend
to respond with an email. Which means that the boards would be full of
queries with no answers. Discussions would be one-on-one and you could
miss a tie-in to your family, etc. If the person who originated the board
posting isn't on the list, he/she probably won't get the answers either.

Gateways tend to do well on smaller lists (like surname lists),
but seem to create havoc on larger lists.

Diann and I will continue to discuss this periodically and,
hopefully, one day we may be able to come up with a compromise.
