Subject: [PaCambri] Help with an 1890's ledger, Wheatfield Twp. Ind. Co./ William Clark
Date: Sat, 5 Jul 2003 17:28:22 -0400

The ledger mentioned below refers to Indiana Co. But I hope someone on the Cambria list can help. ( Also, many folks moved back and forth between the counties, my ancestors did.)

I purchased a small ledger and written on the front is, William Clark's
Duplicate for West Wheatfield Twp. I've seen duplicates for taxes
but this doesn't seem to be for property. The pages list as follows:
Name, Value, Cash, Work. for example the first entry is;
Isaac K. Alcorn, Val. 13.24, Cash $1.32, Work $7.94.

Does this type of tabulation look familiar to anyone?

There was a receipt in the book from the Indiana Co. Commissioner's
Office dated 1897, paying F. L. Clark $19.30 Road Tax.

The listing of names includes men and women, heirs and companies.
I'm guessing a road tax was collected from the property owners and maybe
the dollar amount under the work column had to do with improvements on the road
either by the owner or the township?

I'm hoping someone on the list may be familiar with this Road Tax.

The book itself has no date except for an entry in the back for a settlement dated 1896.
There are allot of names, if the list thinks it would be helpful I could post them. It would at
least place the person in West Wheatfield Twp. in the 1890's.

Thanks, Marcia Fronk
