Bill recently asked:a good question ...
Do the funeral home records really give that much information? I figured it
would be like who paid the bill, where they were buried, etc.. Just
wondering....

Bill, these days, the funeral home is often the one who files the death
certificate and notifies social security , therefore they must ask many
questions.
They also take the information for the newspaper, therefore they keep a copy
of all the survivors and their locality.
There may be contact by letter or phone noted in a file of a survivor at a
later date regarding setting a stone, care of the lot, etc. and that could
tell you where a child is/was living.
Even in some of the old mortuary records there is a notation of the size of
the casket ... good information if you have a near 7 ft tall person, or a
400 pound person. A closer date of death if you only have a year on a
tombstone can be calculated when you find the date they order the casket.
Often a small child born between census years is discovered by searching
mortuary records.

Note ... I know that some mortuary records in Kansas have been microfilmed
and are available through LDS. I don't know about other areas.
