>From The Controller's 24th annual report of Cambria County:
Interesting information on juvenile probations, mother's assistance relief fund, etc. For some reason the county tracked the number of people within each ethnicity and religion. These numbers are likely indicative of the ethnic and religious makeup of the county and doesn't mean Catholics are more incorrigible than Protestants. For example:
Probation Bureau for juveniles in the court
Nativity of Cases
Incorrigible or delinquent Dependent or neglected
American - white 154 66
American - of color 9 3
Italian 47 28
Russian 13
Slavish 121 47
Polish 119 52
Hungarian 14 3
Lithuanian 2
Jewish 1
Mexican 4
Religion of cases:
Roman Catholic 260 109
Greek Catholic 22 15
Greek Orthodox 2 6
Protestant 195 73
Jewish 1
Mother's assistance (relief)
There were 273 families on the relief rolls in Jan 1934. Total average grant per family- $31.64 Interestingly, my great grandmother was listed as getting $161.83
Roman Catholic 121
Evangelical 14
Christian Alliance 6
United Brethren 20
Presbyterian 12
Methodist 22
Lutheran 19
Baptist 5
Episcopal 3
Greek Catholic 24
Church of God 2
Greek Lutheran 9
Congregational 1
Pentecostal 2
Dunkard 1
Reformed 1
Lots of interesting information like how many bushels of produce such as green beans were produced at the Juvenile Home farm for use at the County Children's Home and Jail, vegetables canned, etc. Apparently the juvenile home produced and sold sauerkraut made there.
In general few names listed but if you wonder if a relative is on the relief rolls and where they were at the time let me know.
Dave
