As a practicing Catholic who recently received a sacrament, I thought I might
add one additional note to this statement, particularly since it's something
I didn't know myself until a few months ago. If you can determine the parish
where a Catholic was baptized, you might want to check that parish for all
other sacramental records, too.
I was just 'remarried' to my husband of ten years, this time in a Catholic
ceremony. My priest had to order my baptismal certificate from a parish of
which I have not been a member since I was six years old. The only sacrament
I received at that church was baptism. The priest told me that your
baptismal parish keeps your Catholic "record," so to speak, and that any
other parishes which administer the later sacraments (Reconciliation, First
Communion, Confirmation, Matrimony, etc.) are required to have those
sacraments recorded at the church of baptism. Most parishes do keep records
of the sacraments they administer as well, but the official Church record of
an individual's "sacramental life" are at the baptismal parish.
I'm not sure if this 'policy' has been followed for hundreds of years, but it
has been for at least 40 years. Hope the information is helpful.
