Hi Maggie & all,
Just food for thought, but this reminded me of my Dad's own problem upon
retirement while trying to claim his own Social Security benefits.

My dad had an awful time filing a claim when he retired. It seems you need a
copy of your birth certificate to make this claim & try as he did, he could
not manage to find his own birth certificate! My dad went through all of life
with the name of Dwight David Goughnour. He never knew any different. A birth
certificate was finally located for a male child named O'Donnell Dwight
Goughnour (Goughnour spelled wrong too), born to his parents on the same
date, same birth place, etc. He wound up having to have 2 of his sisters
write letters to Social Security to swear this was indeed him. Why his
parents never told him his real name is a mystery. He was so frustrated &
sure went through a mess before he got it all straightened out.
Hope this helps!
DiAnna Goughnour
