My experience with the SSDI is.....it is best to just put the surname and
leave off a first name. This will take care of the problem of trying to find
the given name the user used. By putting their surname only all first names
appear, ie. their full given name, nickname, or an initial. The only time
this is a real problem is if your family has a common name as in Smith, Jones
etc. You might also want to try a couple variations to the spelling of the
surname. I have also found someone listed in one index and not in another,
such as in ancestry.com's index and not rootsweb or vice versa.
