Subject: [PACAMBRI] Industry in Loretto ?????
Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2000 08:51:23 PDT

Perhaps the subject line 'Industry in Loretto' sounds a bit like
a contradiction in terms, but references to small-scale industrial
enterprises do show up.

There were Fr. Gallitzin's sawmill, gristmill, brickward, tannery, and
potash factory.

And more recently ref's. to a foundry established in Loretto in 1849 by P.J.
Little [born 1809]. The 1850 census lists one foundryman living in town.

I have seen a newspaper ref. to a brewery ,, I think connected to the
Bengele family.

I am wondering if anyone might have any clue to the location of any of
these, or know of any small industries around Loretto that I have not become
aware of yet.

Thanks much //////////////////////////// jim miller
