Subject: [PACAMBRI] "Human" Ancestors
Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2000 08:41:56 EST
Hi Friends,
Just had to add my two cents. My Great-Grandmother lived with us when I
was growing up. I only ever knew her as an old, bitter, unhappy lady. Every
year on April 1st, she told us about her brother's April Fool's Day trick.
He covered his face with ashes and told his teacher his house burned down.
That very night the house did burn down and he was killed with his father and
4 siblings. Passing through Johnstown a few years ago I stopped at the
library and looked for an article about the fire. All I knew was April
1st-not even a definite year. I found it! The article, and things I've
found since, made Great-Grandma "human" and now I know that her life was so
hard that she had some reason for being like she was.
The article also included many names of friends, neighbors and strangers
who opened their hearts and helped this greatly bereaved family. It is
posted on the Cambria County website in that new section. Check and see if
your ancestors helped mine! My Great-Grandma was Lizzie MITCHELL, who is
mentioned frequently in the article and is credited with saving her baby
sister's life.
