Hi,
I thought I'd post to the list excerpts of what I recieved in the mail on the
history of the Harmonie Singing Society of Johnstown from thier 100th
Anniversary in 1965, maybe someone relative was a founding member...
Organized on June 20, 1865 for the purpose of serving as a choir for Zion
German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Johnstown...30 founding members:
Constantin Nennstiel John Raab George Raab
August Danges Henry Schaeffer John Von Alt
Conrad Raab John Tham Henry Herzberger
Henry Sherer John Gerhardt Adolph Wolf
August Burggraf Ephraim Franke Andrew Henning
John Frank Christ Heinze August Wiegand
Conrad Bader Ludwig Reitz Henry Schmidt
Carl Ahrens Carl Wehn Jacob Schuetz
John Kamler John Bader Phillip Berg
John Hochstein Carl Koehler Louis Engelbach
At the morning services of the church June 27 1865 the Harmonie Choir made
thier debut and continued to function as the church choir. 3 years later
they accepted a generous offer of John Fritz to hold its rehearsals in his
hall which continued as its headquarters until May 1878. In that month, the
society moved to a location on Bedford Street called Heubachs Hall and was
offered 3 years of free rent. They purchased the property in 1880. They
applied to the court for a charter and on Dec 13th 1883, the decree of
Incorporation was signed by the court.
There is plenty more but I was interested in the founding history of it to
post to the list
Maureen
