A wonderful fellow out there just located for me an obituary for Maria Stempel Kriston. It settles once and for all who the mother of my grandfather was. It was she. My father is absolutely delighted to know at last that his grandmother was Maria. For at least 50 years the question has been there. And now it is settled.

Maria Stempel Kriston died in Cambria City, in 1907. The obituary was in the Johnstown Tribune.

The obituary says that Gustave Kriston was a "well known merchant of McConaughy Street". Would this address be in Cambria City or in Johnstown? Does anyone know whether the address refers to his business address or their residence? Is anyone familiar with that area? Do any city directories exist of Cambria City in that time period? Or might they be included in Johnstown's city directory?

And what about newspapers? Did Cambria City have a separate newspaper, or did the Tribune serve as the local paper for all the area?

On a different subject...yesterday Don Varner wrote a little note to the folks subscribed to this list, complimenting them on their helpfulness and friendliness. I agree wholeheartedly. This is one of the best lists I have seen. So many people offer so much help. Thanks to all of you!
