1880, 1900, 1910 & 1920 do not have a standard index. You must use the soundex, which is found on microfilm. It is a condensed record of the full census, showing names of every, their age, and relationship to the head of household. The listings are sorted by state, and then by the soundex code for the surname, and then by first name of head of household. Once you've found the soundex record, it gives the volume, page & line number for the complete record. The 1880 soundex is only for households with children under 10 (those born after the 1870 census)
