For those who are interested in knowing what life was like for a Quaker
family moving to Ohio in 1826 I highly recommend the book American Grit
edited by Emily Foster (part of the Ohio River Valley series published
by Univ of Kentucky). Joseph and Anna Briggs Bentley move to Columbiana
Co Ohio (on the eastern border with Pennsylvania) in 1826 and she
spends the next twenty some years corresponding with her family back in
Maryland. They start their life in a lean-to as so many others did.
It is a fascinating recollection not to be missed for those looking
wanting a better understanding of pioneer life.
