Subject: [PA-QUAKERS] A welcome from the List Mom
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 13:24:08 -0400
Hi all! The last few days have brought a substantial number of subcriptions to the new list PA-QUAKERS, so I thought now would be a good time for a welcoming message.
PA QUAKERS is meant to be a sub-list of QUAKER ROOTS, which I thought was getting quite crowded. My intention for the list was the study and sharing of genealogy for those folks who had Quaker ancestors that lived mostly in Pennsylania. If you have a Quaker family that lived in PA for awhile, and then moved away, this list is also for you. However, if you know that your Quaker family immigrated to and stayed in a state ~other than PA~, perhaps you would find QUAKER ROOTS to be a more helpful list.
I do not pretend to know all that much about the Quaker religion, so hopefully we will have someone subscribe who can be our resident expert. I do have some resource material in which to do lookups (and more info on Quakers should be arriving shortly)-- I will be posting these resources as soon as I get organized.
I would ask that you not post virus warnings, off topic jokes, urban legends, etc to the list. This clogs up Rootsweb's servers and takes up valuable space in the mailing list archives. And most of them are hoaxes anyway.
I also do not mind (and sometimes enjoy!) a heated discussion about all things genealogical. It can certainly be interesting to see different perspectives on a subject, but please do not let things deteriorate to the point where there is out and out flaming and insulting of others. A person will be removed from the list if he/she becomes too abusive.
Please make sure you put something pertinent in the subject line of your e-mail. I am guilty of "unhelpful subject lines" sometimes myself, but it really does make a difference if you give good info.
I have the list set up so that the replies do NOT come back to the list. There are alot of different thoughts on this subject, but I have left it at this: If you feel that others would be helped by a reply that you are making to someone, please change the "TO" line of the e-mail and send it to the PA QUAKERs list. However, if it is just a "thank you" or a "Me too" type of mailing, those should be sent privately. Most of us who are avid genealogists belong to many lists and get much e-mail, and the "Thank you/Me Too" types of postings can be rather annoying.
If we run into any problems, we will just solve them as they come up. If you have any problems or questions, please write to me privately.
My Quaker lines in PA are: William and Ann (Bagley) Brinton, Joseph and Mary (Haines) Taylor, Henry and Mary (Peace) Willis, and I am a WICKERSHAM descendent as well, but don't quite know yet where I fit into that line.
Please feel free to post your Pennsylvania Quaker lines at any time!
Your list mom,
Sherry Jesberger
