Tony,

I went to school in Woodstock with a JOHN GREATBATCH. I can't recall exactly
where he was from, but Marlborough School had pupils from all round the
Woodstock area. I think he may have been from Woodstock itself. He would be
45/46 now and born around 1955 as he was in the same year as me. So there
were GREATBATCH's in that area as well as Oxford.

Hi, I'm a new member on this list and hope that there may be someone
out there who can help with tracing the origins of the GREATBATCH
name in and around Oxford. I've been "lurking" on your newslist for the
past couple of months and have been amazed at the amount of
information that seems to be available!
I would be particularly grateful if anyone could provide Census
information (I have 1881) on any of the individuals named below together
with any other information from commercial directories of the period.
The name definitely originates in North Staffordshire where all my direct
ancesters are based, but a small group appeared in Oxford in the early
19th century and still exist today, although I cannot trace the linkages. I

have so far established - through secondary sources - the following:

1830 Directory [Gardners?] Thomas & Joseph Greatbatch, Glass and
Chinaware Dealers, Cornmarket, Oxford
1843 Thomas, Joseph and William Greatbatch, Jnr, Glass and
Chinaware Dealers of Oxford and May Bank [an area of Stoke] declared
bankrupt
16 Feb 1847 Ellen Eliza Greatbatch born to Levi Greatbatch and Mary
Ann in Oxford, St Martin
1852 Gardners Directory - Levi Greatbatch, Glass & China Dealer, 15
High Street, Oxford [also a Mrs Greatbatch identified as the Landlord?,
Licensee? of the Crown, Ch. Street]. Levi died on 29 Oct 1903 in
Headington.
Other children: Emma Jane born c1842 Staffs; Fanny Henrietta born c
1844 Lambeth; Kennett Beecham born c1849 All Saints Parish, Oxford;
Frances M born c1850 Oxford; Mary A N born c1854 Oxford; Katherine
Frances born c1856 Oxford; Arthur Mitchell born c1858 Oxford.
I believe that Arthur Mitchell Greatbatch had three children - Philip John
born c1888; Beatrice May born c1890 and Roland Eric born c1890 all in
Oxford - again any help in verifying these would be most helpful.
