Subject: [ORPHANAGES] STREET surname & new member question

Hello everyone;
I'm new to this list and would like to have a look in the list
archives. Can anyone tell me how I can do this?
My research involves my husband's grandfather, James Glenville
Street. Not much is known except that James was born in Manchester in
1886, was an orphan for most of his life, and was "sent" to Ontario,
Canada at about age 15 (c1901). James lived in the Toronto area and
married in 1912, and died in 1964. He had a sister, Annie Street, a
spinster who came to Toronto, Ontario, date unknown. She lived there
in the 20's and 30's and died c1940.
I have been investigating the "Home" child possibilities and have
found that James was not sent by Barnardos. I know that there are
other organizations to check. But I find it strange that James had
contact with Annie - from what family has said (and they know very
little) I don't think they came to Canada together and from what I've
heard of Home children, there was no contact with family members once
they'd been "taken in". One of my husband's cousins has a photograph
of James' father (so I've been told) and I wonder how an orphan or a
Home child would have had any personal effects such as that
photograph.
In any event I'm hoping that this list will educate me further
about orphanages in England and give me new hope and fresh leads in my
search to discover more about my husband's grandfather, James Street.
Thanks for reading all this, and for any information passed along
from list members who have more experience in this area.
Regards,
Cathy Street
