Hi Alexandra,

Marietta is a dim of Mary. So it could well be a personal
family dim of Marietta from Mary. Tho that is not to say
that a Margaret could have been nicknamed Aretta and so commenced the given
name Aretta, then however more likely from Margaretta the phonetic spelling
of Margherita (Ital) or Margarita (Sp) for Margaret.
