A sampler? Is it indeed embroidered or is it a piece of calligraphy? Like
Fraktur? Is it from Alsace or Belgium, perhaps?
"Jm" is Joachim, I'd bet. "Fahre" isn't any sort of French I know,
but then I have no doctorate in French Studies. But it might well be a
German name... Alsatian, that is, or is the sampler from Belgium? Both
have small German-speaking populations within the larger French-speaking
ones. "Emilir" I would guess to be Emilie. In which case it would be a
record of the wedding [?] of Joachim and Emilie Fahre in 1869.
If there were some way to send me a picture by e-mail, I'd love to
see the piece. There's nothing like a little mystere to set ze leetle
grey cells spinning! Is it a piece you had from your family? I only
recently found out that my g.g.grandfather (who raised my grandfather
Reed) was actually born in Belgium and named Rognion, not Runyon.
Yours,
Richard Turner.
