geez...what a thread i started!
'buck' means to cut logs cross grain. In 'the woods' it means
cutting them from whole tree length into 'log' length. Logs are
a standard length, probably determined at the sale. I don't know
how much each are used, or which is the most common, but they are
8, 16, and 32 feet long.
Firewood is measured in cords. A cord is a neatly stacked
woodpile which is four-feet high, four-feet wide, and eight-feet
long. Or four, by two, by 16 feet. With tongue firmly in cheek,
the 'cord' unit of measure said to be one tenth the amount
necessary to last a Montana winter. (The weather in Wisdom,
Montana is best described as 10 months of winter and two months
of 'tough sledding.')
"Haul" referrs to how one gets the wood from where it is growing,
to where the stove is.
