Around the dinner table tonight, the subject of cutting down
trees came up. My son was asking how wildland firefighters cut
big trees down, particularly when they are on fire. I explained
that the firefighters request a 'faller' when the tree is beyond
their skill-range to cut down. I have seen 'fallers' (usually
individuals who work for a logging company) on wildland fires
with their BIG chainsaws...with five foot bars on their power
saws. (More jargon...the 'bar' is that flat blade-like portion
of the chainsaw upon which the chain runs round and round).

In the northwest, and probably other parts of the country where
logging has been a major occupation, those who cut down trees are
called 'fallers.' Because lots of people have different kinds of
jobs in a logging operation, calling someone a 'logger' is not
very specific in explaining what they do.
