Thank you again for clarifying that -- I just couldn't understand how it
fit -- because I interpreted heimit as the wrong word besides. The
translation for Hinscheiden was helpful too.

Glad I could be of help. I'm sorry I misunderstood your question - I thought
you had wondered what "Hinscheiden" meant...

"Hiemit" is "Hiermit" (either it was misspelled, or old Swiss German omitted
the "r", I can't be sure). It means "hereby" ore "herewith". It has nothing
to do with the word "Heimat". Your sentence therefore would be translated:
"In deep mourning we hereby painfully notify relatives, friends, and
acquaintances of the passing of...".

I know what you mean regarding your translation difficulties. But I really
think you'll be fine, especially with the course you're planinning on
taking. And if all else fails - there's always the Old German List, right?!

Irene -- thank you so very much for your help and translation. I typed the
St. Francis incorrectly with 2 a's. I was hoping that it might signify a
church or cemetary -- that's is so great that you could tell me that -- now
I can search for either the next time I am in Switzerland -- not that I
expect to find a grave, but it is nice to know. It kind of surprises me
because the large church/cathedral in town is St. Urs.

The only thing that you might have overlooked -- is how heimat is translated
in the sentence "In tiefer Trauer machen wir hiemit Verwandten,
Freunden....... "
That really confuses me because I think of heimit as -town where he is
registered- or is that another heimit?

Thanks again.
I still am going to look into a course this coming semester. You know when
I try to translate something by using the dictionary or translation
program -- the sentence and word structure is like a child's and I feel that
I can put it into English incorrectly and might miss the real meaning of it.

"Hinscheiden" means "passing". So the sentence would continue "...and
acquaintances of the passing of our..."

"Typesetter" is the correct translation for "Schriftsetzer".

Die trauernden Hinterlassenen: "Those left behind and mourning" is a good
and correct translation.

"Anverwandte" is nothing but a more old-fashioned expression for
"Verwandte", i.e. "relatives". So it would be: "and relatives".

"Franziskaner" is an order, named after St. Francis of Assisi. In English:
The Order of Saint Francis. I am unsure about the second "a" in your
transcript - the name of the order is usually only spelled with one "a". I
am assuming the burial took place at a cemetery/church belonging (or having
belonged to) to the Order of St. Francis...

I think you've done a great job deciphering your text, don't get frustrated.
As they say in German: Uebung macht den Meister (Excercise makes the master)

Regarding the P.P. or L.L. I am clueless as to what this could be. Sorry...

I have the notice that my father received of his father's death and there
are a couple of things that I do not understand.

At the top of the page after the date is the abreviation P.P. or L.L.
(unsure of the letter but think it is "P") -- what would this indicate?

In tiefer Trauer machen wir hiemit Verwandten, Freunden und Bekannten die
schmerzliche Mitteilung vom hinscheide unseres ..........
In deep mourning we painfully notify relatives, friends, and acquaintances
??? heimit???

Schriftsetzer? occupation? typesetter??

Then it lists family and below
"Und Anverwandte" And ???

Finally it has the date and time of the funeral -- morgen 9 Uhr zu
Franziskaanern. I understand 9 in the morning hour -- but what is the
Franziskaanern??? Could that be the church????

I would be grateful for any help -- I think I need to look into a German
language course. I find this very frustrating -- even looking at a
German/Eng. dictionary you have to patch word definitions together. Is
there any rule that applies when 2 words are written as one word?
