Hi Audrey,
I checked various directories from the 1780s 1790s, and a few post office
directories from 1810s and 1820s. Nothing came up, I'm afraid. There were
some other Hawk(e)s, but none in Bethnal Green. I also checked bankruptcy
records without success.
There are ways of proceeding, but it can be quite time consuming.
One option is to check for insurance records on www.a2a.org.uk (many of the
early C19 Sun fire insurance records have been indexed by the Guildhall).
If they didn't own the property (which seems likely), do you have an exact
street address? If the property was insured at the time they were living
there, it may be worth looking at the policy. Policies often list the
occupants of the insured property, and sometimes their occupation.
If you don't have the exact address, you may also be able to trace it
through land tax records -- the LMA has a fairly complete set for Bethnal
Green 1780-1832. Tax records can sometimes throw up interesting additional
information.
best,
Michael

Hello Michael.
Yes, I do know that the London directories were amongst the first in the
country and if you can possibly look at them this man may just be in one of
them. He is John Richard Hawkes (can't remember if he is spelled that way or
he may be down as Hawks - spelling, as you know, didn't matter so much
then). His son was born in 1801 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex (later to become
part of greater London). The baptism is registered. His son later appears to
have become a mariner and then, at 29, an early joiner of the Metropolitan
Police Force. By the time his children were being registered, there was a
great deal of information on the families and very valuable they are.
Audrey
