Hi John

Certainly will. I am also going to have a go with some of Polly's
suggestions .

The father's name was John Richard Hawkes. The 1851 census gave the correct
date and place of birth (1801) for the son which enabled me to find that
baptism. When the son was 29, he joined the newly formed Metropolitan Police
Force and so had to comply with their
qualifications which showed that he had been educated . This one of the main
reasons I would like to know his occupation as he must have had sufficient
resources and have valued education enough to send his son to school. As his
son later appears to have become a mariner, it can't have been necessary for
his future career. The police force would not have figured in his thoughts
at a time when his son was of an age to be educated as his son was one of
the very early joiners of the police force, joining just a few months after
it was instituted. The policeman son also valued education as his son showed
that he, too, could read and write by filling in a form in his own
handwriting for a survey carried out by his employers. His son, by the way,
was christened Richard.
