Subject: [OEL] 17th century wills, Middlesex and Northampton Counties

Over the last few weeks I have been working on transcribing wills from
the two counties mentioned. A common thread in all of them is each one
bequeaths a sum of money varying from 5-10 pounds "to buy him/her/them a
ring".
What is the significance, if any, of someone making a bequest to insure
that a sibling, cousin, etc, had a ring. The wills all came from those
held by the Preogative Court of Canterbury and were fairly wealthy
people. I was wondering if it was a custom or a perchance happening.
Thanks for any enlightment.
