Listers:
I have several court rolls from the 1570s in Worcestershire.
In the margin of several of the rolls, appearing after the heading, essoins
and members of the homage/jury appears the phrase: "Jur' in Assaiam' Dne'
Regine" followed by a list of names.
>From the context I believe that this may be the swearing in of new members
of the manorial court, and I imagine the meaning is something like "Sworn on
oath to [our] Lady Queen", but can anyone be more specific with regard to an
expanded form of "Assaiam"?
TIA
Paul Prescott
