Marjory PETTY Austen
Are there any PETTY family members remaining in the Perry, Fairfield,
Licking, Muskingum, Meigs, Pickaway, Clark and Champaign counties? These
areas plus recent research which leads me to think that perhaps some of this
line might have been in Lorain and Wyandot counties leads me to post this
lengthy query in each of these area. If you have ANY contact w/ a PETTY
family in the state of OH, could you please get in touch w/ me?
I am attempting to piece together the entire group of offspring that Joseph
and Elizabeth Petty WHO CAME TO PERRY COUNTY IN 1808 FROM NJ TO what was then
Reading Tp in Fairfield County, which was later a part of Perry County. I
have extensive data on this line but I am especially lacking in the offspring
of their oldest child, John PETTY, b. 1785 in NJ who may have married Tene
SEYMOUR in Perry County shortly after the family's arrival in OH. John is
the only John Petty I can locate in Perry/Fairfield in 1815 when I believe
that he married Tene and had at least a daughter, Jane. This marriage
actually occurred; but I want to hasten to assure you that it is only a
theory that it is my John Petty. I just cannot locate another individual by
that name in that time period in that location. I know nothing about the
Seymour family.
John's second wife, documented, was Delia DANISON/DENNISON, who may have
given birth to Thomas in 1821 about the same time he and Delia purchased land
from his parents. I have that document. There could have been other
offspring because I found a Sarah PETTY later in Clark County where her
father went in 1830, but I do not have proof that she belongs to John and
perhaps Delia.
Apparently, Delia died because John sold the land later, and went to Clark
County, OH where he married Martha FORT, a widow w/ at least one son, William
FORT b. in KY. Together, I believe that they had Ann C.F. Petty who married
Washington PIERCE, of Clark County but originally a Perry County family. Ann
was born in 1835 and a son, Augustus PETTY, was b. in 1838. Ten years later,
I think John died and the children are found w/ their Mother, Martha, in the
1850 Census for Clark County. I have found no burial info about John but he
is not in the 1850 Census and there is a death reported ca. 1847 in Clark
County of John Petty.
In the 1850 Census, next door to Martha in is found Jane PETTY EMMICK, w/o of
David, and her children and living w/ the family is Thomas PETTY. I can only
assume that these are older children whose birthdates calculate to those
given above and are the children of John and his earlier wives.
Surely, somewhere there are descendants of these families who could have
knowledge about the origins of this family back in NJ. Several researchers
and myself theorize, only, that Joseph was the son of Capt. John Petty of the
NJ Continental Militia since there are no other Petty families in the area w/
Joseph except the Capt. and his wife Margaret. (Incidentally, according to
naming patterns, Joseph and Elizabeth named their first son, John and the
first daughter, Margaret. Of course, if Elizabeth was a VANATTA as some
researchers believe, her parents were John and Margaret McCRACKEN, so so much
for naming patterns. Documentation about her maiden name is sadly lacking
also.)
If you have any knowledge of the PETTY, or any of the allied lines who
married into the Petty family, please get in touch w/ me so that we can
compare notes. I have researched Clark CO. but I have found no descendants
there and the entire family group has disappeared from that area by 1860.
Martha and all of the children were last recorded in the 1850 Census and NONE
remain by 1860. The EMMICK family is also gone as are Jane and David EMMICK.
I have found both of these allied lines in Lawrence CO., IL records but
these specific individuals so at least some contact was kept w/ the siblings
of John Petty who pioneered the IL frontier in the 1830s.
The remainder of John Petty's siblings either went to ILL or remained in
Perry CO. They married STOLTZ, VANATTA, BARNES, PEPPLE, PARGIN, ANGLE,
CLOVER, McCREARY spouses. I have extensive info on most of the these lines
and I am more than willing to share. I just need to find data on John and
the lines he left behind. Does anyone know where his descendants may have
gone.
There is one more child whose offspring have disappeared from view and whose
descendants may still remain in these counties I am attempting to canvas.
Aaron PETTY remained in Perry/Muskingum County areas and was a blacksmith by
trade. He married Agnes, sometimes listed as Nancy, McCREARY who was a widow
of Unknown McCREARY. She and Aaron had five children rather close together,
4 boys, William, John, Josiah, and Simon and last a daughter Mary E. PETTY.
Aaron died fairly soon after the little girl's birth, cause unknown. He was
only in his young thirties. Agnes/Nancy did not remarry for several years
but eventually in 1855, she married Benjamin HARDIN. I have not found her
PETTY children and I do not know if she had any by either of the other
husbands.
I also am suspicious of a connection to the lines who came into Washington,
Gallia, Guernsey, and perhaps other southern Ohio counties. Family
resemblances in old photos are astounding. If you have any photos to share
of these families, I would be most interested in hearing from you.
I have many lines of PETTY descendants so do NOT just assume that you are not
related to any of the people described above. I have and will SHARE w/
anyone able to connect w/ what I have much data. PLEASE HELP me sort out
this line of PETTY family who pioneered Perry County and represents thousands
of descendants of various surnames. If you ever heard of Aunt Bessie or
Uncle Joe being a PETTY and you know nothing about them, please contact me.
Perhaps together we can make sense out of the Ohio Petty Quagmire I have on
my hands.
Thank you for any hints, photos, data, ideas, or any reasonable facsimile
thereof, I want/need to hear from you. I have already connected several
small lines, I am wanting to get a handle on the whole picture.
