Subject: [NYCAYUGA] Odell's and Petersilie's in Auburn and Skaneateles

A week ago I would have never thought of sending a message with this subject as they
would have seemed too disjoint. My paternal grandfather's mother was Mary Elizabeth
(Odell) Hart and my paternal grandmother's aunt was Ella (Marks) Petersilie.

But that was a week ago, and hopefully someone will have some additional information
I can add to either or both of my grandfather's or grandmother's sides of the
family.

While tracking Petersilie's I found the following in Saint Joseph's Cemetery in
Fleming, Cayuga County, NY:

Peterslie Helen 11/11/1910 Germany 11 98 2-NE Skaneateles,NY Pneumonia

So I checked out the 1910 Census in enumeration district 92, Skaneateles Village,
Onondaga County, New York and found Helen Petersil, age 73, listed as the mother-in-law
of the head of house Eugene Odell and his wife Amelia Odell.

Eugene's age, 48, is consistent with the age my great-grandmother's brother Eugene
would be in 1910. And Amelia's age, 54, fits into a 10-year gap I have with her
parents, who I have born in Prussia.

Also from the 1910 Census, Eugene and Amelia had each been married once. They'd
been married 15 years. and Amelia had had 4 children, 3 of whom were still living
at the time of 1910 Census. One of them, 9-year-old Beatrice was living with them.

A check of the 1920 Census located them still in Skaneateles Village, enumeration
district 104. In it, Eugene and Amelia are joined by their son-in-law Raymond
Welch, age 22, and his wife Beatrice.

I haven't located them in the 1900 Census. They are very likely in Auburn, Cayuga County,
New York. The 1900 Auburn City Directory lists:

Petersilie Helen, widow Harmon J, h over 105 State
Petersilie John, laborer, bds over 105 State (Helen and Harmon J.'s son)
Petersilie William M, baker, h 65 Pulsifer (Helen and Harmon J.'s son and
great-great aunt Ella's husband)
AND
Odell Eugene, iron worker, h over 105 State

Amelia and Eugene would have been married in 1895, or thereabouts.

The 1890 Auburn City Directory lists:

Eugene Odell brakeman L V R R 153 1/2 Clark NY
AND, more importantly for this discussion
Sarah Lewis widow Amos 153 1/2 Clark NY

Sarah Lewis is in all likelihood Eugene's mother. Sarah Congdon married George Odell in
Dryden, Tompkins County, NY in 1850. After George's death in 1868, she remarried Amos
Lewis.
