Sally--Well, there are many angles to this; one can adapt grandparent's
names as a patronymic, for example, Peter's father may have been
William=Willi>Willis? The book I have is the same one referred to by
PowellChristian, NAMES, NAMES, & MORE NAMES---LOCATING YOUR DUTCH ANCESTORS
IN COLONIAL AMERICA; Arthur C. M. Kelly, Ancestry Pub., C 1999. ISBN:
0-916489-91-4.
It has tables of names as found in various documents, as well as general
guidelines. in the Dutch community, a Rachel married a Peter (first name
table) ; New York Reformed Church Marriages, in 1698 and 1699, for
example(from the BRIDE & GROOM PAIRS DIRECTORY). Again, from the
FATHER/MOTHER PAIRS DIRECTORY, a Peter and a Rachel are parents (New York
Reformed Church Baptisms, 1659, 1662, and 1699. In the SURNAME/PATRONYMIC
COMBINATIONS, a Cornelis, a Jacobs. and a Jans Schermerhorn are recorded as
observed. Bill Lester
