I believe that the very first "official" potter's field (run
by the City) in Manhattan was in the area of what is now
Washington Square Park and New York University. It was
opened sometime in the late 1790's and closed sometime in
the 1820's, I believe, but no bodies were re-interred, if I
remember correctly.

The second potter's field I believe was somewhere in today's
midtown area. I don't recall the exact location but I do
seem to remember that when it closed and the Hart Island
potter's field was opened in 1869, the bodies of the old
plot WERE re-interred on Hart Island. I could be wrong, but
that's what I remember of this sort of history. If so, some
of the records of the old cemetery may exist at the
Municipal Archives.
Best regards. Nancy.
