Hello,
I don't remember a whole lot about the war. What I remember is no
bubble gum. Just because it was in short supply, we used to wait in line
for it on delivery day, so we could pick up our limit...somewhere between
3 and 5 penny pieces....not a lot anyway. This might even have been
directly after the war. I don't think bubble gum was a priority. I also
remember taking the foil off of gum wrappers and rolling it up. We
sometimes carried it around in a little match box and told the younger
kids that it was our fillings. Ya, we ripped them right out! I vaguely
remember when Roosevelt died. I came home from school, probably pre
school or kindergarten and I knew even on my way home that something was
wrong. Everything was very quiet and you could hear some people
sniffling. I could hardly wait to get home and find out what on earth
happened. My mom told me the president died. Everyone was very sad. Mary
