1825
January 3rd 1825 ~ This p.m. a meeting held at Court House to devise means to
counteract ye Camdenites in respect to removal of Court House and other
public buildings from Woodbury to Camden.

January 8th 1825 ~ Recorded marriage certificate of John B. COOPER and
Isabella PAUL.

January 13th 1825 ~ Isaac MICKLE's son, Benjamin and Ann BLACKWOOD married
this day at Haddonfield.

January 21st 1825 ~ Hinchman HAINES' son, Hinchman [Jr.] and Priscilla
WARRINGTON, late from and ye residents of ye State of Ohio, and daughter of
Abraham WARRINGTON of said place, and Hester WARRINGTON of near Moorestown,
daughter of Henry WARRINGTON all dined here today.

January 25th 1825 ~ Went to Deptford Upper School in company with Patience
SPARKS, widow of Thomas, to introduce her and three sons, Josiah, Robert and
Samuel SPARKS to ye teacher, Thomas BOOTH.

February 7th 1825 ~ Gave Dr. FITHIAN liberty to make and burn a brick kiln on
my triangular lot bought of John TATUM.

February 8th 1825 ~ James STEPHENS' brother of ye late Rachel SAUNDERS,
deceased, interred this day at family burial ground.

February 9th 1825 ~ Election day in Woodbury to determine whether ye seat of
Justice be removed from Woodbury to Camden. Gave my vote in favor of its
continuance at Woodbury and Friends very generally gave their votes in favor
of Woodbury. A very general election to which ye sick, lame and blind were
brought forward.

February 10th 1825 ~ Election return at Egg Harbor gave to Camden a majority
of 159 votes. Total vote in the County of 4,160. Majority for Woodbury 876.
But 8 votes in Deptford in favor of Camden.

February 14th 1825 ~ Bought of Enoch ALLEN, merchant tailor of Philadelphia,
tenement lately occupied by his brother Ira ALLEN. Leased it to Samuel
JOHNSON.

February 17th 1825 ~ Sarah COOPER, widow of Amos, deceased this a.m.

February 17th 1825 ~ Nathaniel BUZBY, Maurice River, deceased 10th month 10th
last.

February 18th 1825 ~ Cousin Hannah WHITALL informed me her father, John
MICKLE deceased when she was about 15 months of age, viz: in 5th month 1774.
Herself born 2nd month 13th day 1773.

February 23rd 1825 ~ Cousin Mary GLOVER, wife of William GLOVER, and
daughter of cousin Samuel MICKLE, deceased this morning aged 48 years 4
months 7 days.

February 23rd 1825 ~ Benjamin CARPENTER, Cedar Cooper, deceased. Rachel
ALLEN, daughter of Anthony and Mary ALLEN, deceased this p.m., aged 55 years
10 months 4 days.

March 1st 1825 ~ Josiah CLARK, deceased last night.

March 2nd 1825 ~ Village Herald says George ALBERTI, Jr.[ALBERTY], Constable,
was shot on Tuesday week [3rd day 22 ulto.] near Haddonfield in an attempt to
arrest a fugitive slave.

March 8th 1825 ~ Chalkey GLOVER married 3rd inst.

March 16th 1825 ~ Village Herald of this date: "Died at his residence at
May's Landing on Wednesday last 9th inst. Colonel Richard WESTCOTT in ye
92nd year of his age." But agreeable to what he told me a few years ago, he
was but in his 90th year, viz: 89 years 4 months of age.

March 17th 1825 ~ At auction of E. D. WOODRUFF's [law library] books at John
DUNHAM's tavern.

March 31st 1825 ~ Richard SNOWDEN of Philadelphia, formerly of Woodbury,
deceased last evening.

March 31st 1825 ~ Richard JORDON lost his wife about three weeks ago.

April 7th 1825 ~ Howard ABBOTT and Susan STOKES married.

April 8th 1825 ~ Drew letter of Attorney appointing Zebulon WOLF [WOLFE] to
ye care of my Swedesboro business, he to collect and pay me ye ground rents
and he to receive ten percent for his trouble.

April 9th 1825 ~ Mary HOPPER, deceased, aged 46 years 1 month, wife of
William HOPPER, late Mary SAUNDERS and daughter of John SAUNDERS, deceased.
She came to reside in my family when about 7 years of age and continued
therein until she married William HOPPER, then 24 years of age, in my family
about 17 years.

April 11th 1825 ~ At funeral of Mary HOPPER in Friends Burial Ground.

April 19th 1825 ~ Eli STRATTON, from Ohio, lodges.

April 20th 1825 ~ Executed to Zebulon WOLF [WOLFE] letter of attorney to
transact my business at Laddstown.

April 23rd 1825 ~ Gideon SCULL deceased 20th inst. [Quaker, died April 20,
1825 in Upper Penns Neck, aged about 70.]

April 24th 1825 ~ One of our Woodbury Lawyers, Robert PEARSON, deceased last
night.

May 3rd 1825 ~ Cousin Isaac MICKLE [Esq.] deceased, in Camden, in his 68th
year.

May 3rd 1825 ~ Went to Philadelphia, visited ZOLLICOFF's medical store, N. E.
corner Pine and 6th Street. Anna GUEST informed me that her sister,
Elizabeth, was born 7th month 1749 NS [New Style].

May 5th 1825 ~ John KNIGHT and Mary LIPPINCOTT married today at Upper
Greenwich.

May 7th 1825 ~ Received first report of Provident Society for ye employment
of the poor, also a copy of address delivered before Philadelphia Society for
Promoting Agriculture at its annual meeting on ye 18th January 1825, by
Robert(s) VAUX.

May 13th 1825 ~ Discovered a multitude of snow drops in orchard lot.

May 25th 1825 ~ Benajah ANDREWS, overseer of roads, employed in digging and
hauling away the dirt in front of my dwelling. [Benajah ANDREWS died
December 23rd 1825, on his birthday.]

June 4th 1825 ~ Thomas BOOTH, teacher of ye boys' upper school, expects to
proceed to Fairhill School in Maryland to receive $400 per annum and his
boarding.

June 11th 1825 ~ Adin G. CRAFT deceased yesterday. [Of the ship Cyrus of
Boston, died at the home of his father in Upper Greenwich, aged 28.]

June 27th 1825 ~ Monthly Meeting. No business except signing a certificate
of removal for John KNIGHT [son of Paul COOPER's wife by former husband] to
monthly meeting of Farmingham, State of New York.

July 6th 1825 ~ Joseph JUSTICE, brick mason in Philadelphia fell from
scaffold last week and died.

July 20th 1825 ~ Josiah ELDRIDGE, Evesham, deceased 15th inst.

July 24th 1825 ~ Cousin Joseph WHITALL informed me his cousin, Samuel COOPER
[General Samuel COOPER] near ye lower bridge over Raccoon Creek [at Repaupa],
deceased yesterday, to be interred ye p.m. Son of Robert COOPER who used to
farm for Uncle John LADD, deceased. Said Robert COOPER and Benjamin WHITALL
each married a daughter of John HOPPER, deceased. Said John HOPPER dwelt on
ye farm whereon Benjamin LORD now resides.

July 23rd 1825 ~ Thermometer this and several days past about 100 degrees.

July 29th 1825 ~ Samuel HUDSON's sister, Sarah HUDSON, deceased this a.m.

August 2nd 1825 ~ Attended funeral of Daniel PACKER's child, aged about three
years. James GIBSON's wife, Hannah, deceased last night.

August 3rd 1825 ~ General James GILES, in ye 67th year, died at Bridgeton,
23rd ult., formerly an inhabitant of Woodbury. Thomas CLEMENT's wife,
Rachel, deceased this morning.

August 9th 1825 ~ Rachel CONARD gave up her school in upper school room in
females' school house.

August 10th 1825 ~ Anne LAWRIE [LOWRY ~ LAWRY], wife of Thomas LAWRIE,
interred 7th inst. James FREELAND, deceased about 2 months since.

August 11th 1825 ~ Informed by Jesse OWEN that his father, Joshua OWEN,
deceased last 3rd month. Stephen GRELET at Quarterly Meeting on business.

August 14th 1825 ~ At meeting, Hannah TEST, widow of Zaccheus TEST, daughter
of Joseph REEVES [REEVE], deceased from ye State of Ohio last Autumn, on
visit she says they removed from ye neighborhood about 20 years since and
that her husband deceased 2nd month 2nd day 1819.

August 23rd 1825 ~ William HOPPER deceased.

August 31st 1825 ~ Abigail WOODRUFF, widow of Elias Deacon WOODRUFF, and
daughter of Samuel WHITALL removed yesterday to her fathers in Maryland and
from thence intends removing to Trenton.

August 31st 1825 ~ This days Herald says on ye 11th of August, Elizabeth
DRIVER deceased and buried at New Freedom; aged 90 years 2 months. Elizabeth
DRIVER, widow of John DRIVER. [Elizabeth's first husband was John TICE.
Their offspring numbered seven children. By her second husband, Henry THORN,
two children. By her third, no children.]

Josiah H. MIDDLETON, son of Aaron H. MIDDLETON deceased, late of Woodbury.

September 4th 1825 ~ Attended at ye house of Doctor Samuel HOWELL in Woodbury
ye funeral of his child which was interred at Newton.

September 12th 1825 ~ Entered my 80th year.

September 18th 1825 ~ Anne ROE, wife of Robert ROE, born 7th month 12th day
1791, deceased this morning.

Samuel WEBSTER having at several times disputed my calculations respecting ye
old and new Stile [calendar] and he calling in to see me ye evening I showed
him Poor Richard's Almanac for 1752 wherein is the British Act of Parliament
for changing the Old Stile to ye new. When after some altercation, he
concluded my calculation to be right, viz: ye 12th of 9th month New Stile to
be my birth day being born 7th month 1st day 1746 Old Style.

September 25th 1825 ~ Samuel BETTLE, and son Edward, of Philadelphia, at
meeting.

September 27th 1825 ~ Uriah FRENCH deceased today in Woodbury, to be interred
in Friends Burial Ground tomorrow.

September 28th 1825 ~ At funeral of Uriah FRENCH.

September 29th 1825 ~ Attended at ye house the funeral of Elizabeth FORTINER,
wife of Daniel FORTINER, blacksmith in Woodbury. Interred at Haddonfield.

October 1st 1825 ~ Cousin James MICKLE here from ye State of Ohio,
accompanied by Benjamin SHREEVE [SHREVE] of said state whose residence is
about one and a half mile distant from Charles STRATTON's.

October 2nd 1825 ~ Thomas MATTHEWS and Othniel ALSOP from Philadelphia
attended our meeting. They and two of William FOLWELL's sons dined.

October 9th 1825 ~ Mary WOOD, wife of Marmaduke WOOD, deceased today.

October 10th 1825 ~ James GLOVER's wife, Mary, daughter of Isaac DOUGHTEN
[DOUGHTY], deceased this morning.

October 13th 1825 ~ This day 16 years, my dearly beloved wife was released
from ye cares, perplexities and troubles of this uncertain world and left
them to her poor husband to struggle with a little longer.

October 18th 1825 ~ James SAUNDERS [SANDERS] informed me that Sarah SHOEMAKER
in Philadelphia, widow of Jonathan SHOEMAKER, my old mistress also that his
fathers' old master…. Were both interred last 4th day. Sarah SHOEMAKER, born
May 31st 1731 N.S, therefore, aged 94 years 4 months 3 days, or in her 95th
year.

November 3rd 1825 ~ Went in Dearborn wagon to Philadelphia, called at Thomas
SHOEMAKER's, son of Sarah SHOEMAKER. Her daughter-in-law, Susan SHOEMAKE,
informed me her mother-in-law, Sarah, deceased on 1st day morning, ye 9th
ult. Called to see William FOLWELL and wife between 6th Street and 7th
Street.

November 28nd 1825 ~ Amos PEASLEE [PEASLEY ~ PEASLY] and wife and daughter,
before and from meeting, also Sarah CRESSON, Elizabeth PITFIELD and Thomas
EVANS, son of Enoch EVANS. [at his home, before and after meeting ~?]

December 1st 1825 ~ Went with Benjamin CLOUD to view my lot, lately purchased
of John TATUM [TATEM].

December 7th 1825 ~ Woodbury Herald says John FRITH, deceased 30th ult. In
his 69th year. Peter WHEATON interred today. Black John COOPER gone off to
sea again.

December 9th 1825 Had ten young apple trees grafted, viz: 1 Morgan; 2
Maiden's Blush; 2 Holland Pippins; 1 Newton; 2 Spitzenbury; 2 Wine Saps; all
at 10 cents each.

December 11th 1825 ~ Invitation to funeral of John WARD's wife, Hannah.

December 16th 1825 ~ George WARD's son, Charles WARD, deceased ye morning in
his 29th year.

December 21st 1825 ~ Benajah ANDREWS deceased this a.m., exactly 57 years
old, born December 21st 1768.

December 21st 1825 ~ Woodbury Herald says on 5th inst. Jesse SPARKS, in
Gloucester town in [49/] 50th year of his age, and on 14th inst. his widow,
Abigail SPARKS, deceased in [56/] 57th year of age.

December 22nd 1825 ~ Amos PEASLEE [PEASLEY ~ PEASLY] in testimony.

December 23rd 1825 ~ Thomas BOOTH called on his way home to his parents in
Byberry and bid farewell.

December 26th 1825 ~ Heard Henry BRADSHAW of Upper Greenwich, deceased some
time last Autumn, and his son Moses BRADSHAW, deceased yesterday. William
LIPPINCOTT, of Upper Greenwich, deceased this morning, aged 70 years, 2
months, 12 days.

December 26th 1825 ~ From meeting came Hannah STEPHENS, wife of Isaac
STEPHENS, his son Isaac, daughter Hannah, and his wife's sister, Mary
WEATHERBY.
