January 4th ~ Invitation to funeral of Jonathan BROWN who deceased this
morning in his 76th year.
January 13th ~ Sheriff, Col. John BAXTER deceased this p.m.
January 19th ~ Cato LEWIS, Black man, deceased last night at Grace ATMORE's
house.
January 19th ~ John STERLING's daughter, Mary, deceased aged about 3 years.
January 26th ~ Jonathan JONES and Mary SHATTERTHWAITE from Maurice River, on
visit to all ye monthly meetings in ye Quarterly.
February 4th ~ Election in Woodbury today for Sheriff in room of John BAXTER
deceased. Four candidates viz: Enoch DOUGHTY of Egg Harbor, Charles C.
STRATTON, J. HINCHMAN and John P. VanNEMAN. I voted by ballot for Charles C.
STRATTON I not having voted for 30 years I suppose.
February 5th ~ Short Meeting. Isaac T. HOPPER of Philadelphia married Hannah
ATMORE yesterday.
February 10th ~ The new Sheriff Enoch DOUGHTY qualified to execute his office.
February 16th ~ Dreamed last night I was elected Sheriff, and quickly
qualified into office, which disturbed me much. Glad to find it but a dream.
February 19th ~ At cousin James HOPKINS ye p.m.; his daughter Beulah
informed me that cousin Hannah FOX in Philadelphia deceased 8th inst. in ye
76th year of her age.
February 29th ~ Monthly Meeting. William FOSTER of Island of Guernsey at
meeting.
March 8th ~ Joseph SAUNDERS' [SANDERS] child Gilbert, aged about 3 months,
deceased.
April 17th ~ Samuel SHUTE of Indiana and wife, Sibyl, daughter of Robert
COOK, deceased; and Sarah, wife of Stacy HAZLETON, said Samuel and wife on
way home to Indiana, called.
April 19th ~ Black John COOPER washed my very dirty chair [vehicle ~ buggy]
at ye creek.
April 25th ~ Invitation to funeral of Sarah REEVES at Kaighn Point, widow of
Clement REEVES [REEVE], daughter of John WOOD, wheelwright, interred tomorrow
in ye Burial Ground near Biddle REEVES.
April 26th ~ Jacob BRANSON and William FANNER [or FARNER~?], Friends from
Ohio, at Monthly Meeting.
April 28th ~ Elizabeth LIPPINCOTT, wife of William, deceased in Philadelphia
last night.
April 30th ~ Meeting appointed for Isaac STEPHENSON [STEVENSON], from
Newcastle, upon Tyne, England.
May 4th ~ Deborah DAVENPORT, deceased this p.m. in her 64th year.
May 4th ~ Benjamin SHEPPARD and Mary SAUNDERS [SANDERS], daughter of James
SAUNDERS, married. They removed to Greenwich, Cumberland County.
May 4th ~ William BALLENGER and Beulah WARD, daughter of Isaac WARD, married.
May 10th ~ Black John COOPER greased my chair and running gears thereof with
linseed oil, and ye leathers thereof, and harness with sturgeon oil.
May 19th ~ Two children of Joseph D. PEDRICK, deceased.
May 25th ~ James DORMAN, cabinet maker in Woodbury, deceased this morning.
May 30th ~ John WOOD's son, Thomas, deceased last night and interred today.
May 30th ~ John SAUNDERS [SANDERS] left us to reside with John KNIGHT, Sr. in
Upper Greenwich until of age; to be put apprentice to some trade. Aged 12
years next 7th month.
June 9th ~ Richard TITTERMANY of Swedesboro, rope maker, formerly of
Philadelphia, deceased at aged 71 years.
June 12th ~ Matilda YARNALL [YARNELL], late ALBERTI [ALBERTY] lodges at his
house.
June 16th ~ John W. TATUM, late of Woodbury, now of Wilmington, married 10th
inst. to Mary CANBY, daughter of Samuel CANBY of Wilmington.
June 19th ~ Had my four Raisors and three Penknives ground by traveling
raisor grinder.
July 2nd ~ Went to Philadelphia; called at 60 N. 2, Sarah SHOEMAKER in 94th
year thence; saw Mary STEWART [STEWARD] at 27 N. 2 for a leghorn hat; called
at John S. WHITALL's at 244 Race Street. Heard that Joseph SCATTERGOOD
deceased ye 27th ult.
July 3rd ~ Heard that Mark LOW [LOWE], son of Thomas LOW, deceased yesterday.
July 13th ~ Took my watch to Albertus SOMERS, watch maker, to have main
spring replaced.
July 17th ~ Lydia REEVE [REEVES], daughter of Peter REEVE, deceased; and ye
grand daughter of John REEVE made me an acceptable visit.
July 17th ~ Samuel RICHARDS said the water gage at the hospital rose four and
six tenth inches in consequence of great rain on 29th ult. James SAUNDERS
[SANDERS] said it was four and one third at Woodbury dam.
July 20th ~ Hannah WOOD, tutoress in ye Females' Upper School Room, having
concluded to quit school keeping entirely, did this day dismiss, took leave,
kissed, and with tears in eyes of each party, bid her scholars an
affectionate and final farewell.
July 20th ~ Left my book No. 99, a treatise on stone and gravel, at Samuel
LADD's house.
July 29th ~ Received at our post office a letter from Rachel R. SIMMONS,
dated 10th inst., being only 19 days from Porto Rico.
August 3rd ~ Samuel SAUNDERS' wife's father, Archibald MOFFATT [MOFFITT ~
MOFFIT], deceased this morning.
August 4th ~ Peter KAPPAS, alias CABBAGE, deceased.
August 11th ~ Jacob LIPPINCOTT, son of Solomon, deceased, and Lydia died on
8th inst. aged about 70 years, at Evesham.
August 12th ~ Diverse Friends from Philadelphia attending meeting, amongst
whom was Ellis YARNALL [YARNELL], John C. EVANS, Samuel RICHARDS, and others.
August 15th ~ Thomas CLARK's wife, Rachel, Doctor McCALLA, John WOOD, Sarah
SCOTT, Josiah FRANKLIN, Samuel HUDSON's wife and two children all ill.
August 17th ~ Doctor William H. McCALLA deceased last night, to be interred
at Greenwich, Cumberland County tomorrow.
August 19th ~ John WOOD deceased, aged about 86 years. Interred ye 20th at
Marmaduke WOOD's ground.
August 21st ~ Joseph MICKLE of Newton to be interred tomorrow.
August 23rd ~ James SAUNDERS' [SANDERS] son, Joseph, deceased this morning at
age nearly 16 years.
August 23rd ~ Application made for David CARSON's son, aged about 3 years, to
be buried in Friends Burial Ground.
August 24th ~ Attended funeral of Joseph SAUNDERS, Jr. [SANDERS]. [Note day
before, he wrote "son of James"]
August 24th ~ James RICHIE's child, Henrietta, deceased this morning.
August 24th ~ James CARRY [CAREY or CORRY] at ye stillhouse lot, deceased ye
a.m.
August 25th ~ The Woodbury Herald of ye day says Charles THOMSON in ye 95th
year of his age deceased 23rd inst. He was Secretary to the Congress of the
United States during ye whole period of the Revolutionary war.
August 25th ~ Great preparations contemplated for ye reception of General
LAFAYETTE and son, George Washington LAFAYETTE, as they may visit ye several
parts of ye United States they having lately arrived at New York from France.
August 26th ~ Visited by Margery Mickle HOPPER and Ruth BASSETT, daughter of
Nathan BASSETT of Wilmington.
August 29th ~ Benedict DORSEY, son of Benedict, Sr., who deceased about 14
years ago, and Edward HICKS [HIX] attended meeting.
August 30th ~ John JUSTICE from Falls Monthly Meeting near Trenton at
meeting. Samuel WEBSTER and George CRAFT borrowed a great coat for him.
August 31st ~ Wrote letter to Rachel R. SIMMONS at Porto Rica.
September 2nd ~ Painted my two largest O'l Cloths [oil cloths] for ye floor
in ye back part of my big parlour for winter season also ye leather to carry
wood on.
September 4th ~ Jeremiah J. FOSTER's son deceased, this being the second,
viz: Clement and Theodore D. FOSTER.
September 4th ~ Heard John DRIVER's agreeable wife deceased yesterday.
September 6th ~ John JOHNSON lately buried his wife and three children, all
he had.
September 6th ~ William DYER deceased about 7 inst. at Sweedesboro.
September 10th ~ Charles OGDEN deceased this morning, had entered his 72nd
year last month.
September 15th ~ Aden CRAFT passed thro Woodbury on stage to his father's
house.
September 16th ~ John DERRICKSON of Swedesboro, deceased today in his 25th
year.
September 17th ~ Isaac BALLENGER, sick, also daughter Priscilla.
September 17th ~ Sarah SCOTT continues ill; Samuel HUDSON's youngest child;
William FIFER and three children sick; Henry ROE's wife sick; Josiah STOKES'
daughter, Lydia, sick; and John DUFFEL's wife sick.
September 20th ~ Elias Deacon [Decou] WOODRUFF, deceased at Trenton yesterday
of bilious fever, in ye 38th year of his age.
September 24th ~ Isaac BALLENGER, deceased. He will be greatly missed in our
neighborhood.
September 30th ~ Mary, widow of Joseph EASTLACK, interred in Friends Burial
Grounds.
September 30th ~ John HUNT of Evesham lately deceased.
October 3rd ~ Sarah SCOTT, deceased, aged 70 years 3 months last.
October 7th ~ Invitation to funeral of Mary JESSUP, only daughter of James
JESSUP, aged about 23 years.
October 13th ~ My beloved wife, this day 15 years, left her solitary husband
and went to Heaven, her home.
October 17th ~ An invitation to funeral of Elizabeth JENNINGS, wife of Reuben
JENNINGS [JENINGS], who deceased last night.
October 18th ~ Thomas CLARK here ye p.m. and took away Clement and Edith
KAY's marriage certificate and informed me his daughter, Edith, intended to
apply at the next sitting of the Legislature for a Divorce from her husband,
ye said Clement H. KAY, and that he was somewhere in ye back parts of New
York State.
October 18th ~ Daniel ENGLAND's funeral at Swedesboro.
October 19th ~ Joseph REEVES, son of Thomas [REEVE] deceased, deceased
yesterday at his residence in Clonmell.
October 23rd ~ Samuel SAUNDERS' [SANDERS] daughter, Mary, aged 5 or 6 years,
deceased ye morning.
November 2nd ~ Hester BALLENGER, widow of Isaac BALLINGER, removed to
Burlington to live with her son Joseph who has a blacksmith trade there.
November 4th ~ Invitation to ye funeral of Elizabeth, wife of Ambrose EWING.
November 4th ~ At meeting where a petition was signed to ye Legislature to
counteract another petition to establish a Race ground in this State.
November 10th ~ Captain William YARNALL, Jr. and wife, late Matilda ALBERTA,
arrived by state and lodge.
November 14th ~ Invitation to ye funeral of Keziah, wife of Isaac COLLINS,
late CHEW and daughter of Job KINSEY, deceased.
November 17th ~ Doctor Jeremiah J. FOSTER's daughter, aged 13 months,
deceased.
November 18th ~ Benjamin BLACKWOOD and Mary Ann HOPKINS married at
Haddonfield.
November 20th ~ Joseph REEVE [REEVES] deceased last night at 83 years 4
months 9 days, buried from his son-in-laws, Michael C. FISHER on 21st.
November 25th ~ Prep Meeting no business except the reading a minute of
Prep't've meeting of 2 month 1767 and rules then made presenting ye terms of
admitting persons not in membership with Friends for interment in Friends
Burial Ground. Samuel WEBSTER now appointed in room of Isaac BALLINGER, late
deceased, as one of the standing committee of 3 for that purpose.
November 26th ~ Doctor Joseph H. ERWIN of Swedesboro, deceased yesterday
morning.
November 27th ~ John T. GLOVER, fuller, deceased last evening in ye 71st year
of his age.
December 1st ~ Joseph GARWOOD plastering tenement.
December 3rd ~ Mentions account against Dr. Francis HOVER.
December 6th ~ Rachel CONNOR, from New London township, Chester County,
Pennsylvania, began as teacher in Females Upper School.
December 9th ~ James M. GLOVER married Mary S. DOUGHTEN [DOUGHTY].
December 10th ~ Went to Philadelphia. Cousin Thomasin ROBERTS' widow of
George ROBERTS and daughter of Joseph FOX, deceased about three weeks ago.
December 12th ~ Mickle WHITALL came ye morning and staid about half hour and
bid farewell for about 16 months absence. He expecting to sail as Captain in
a large New Ship in about a week hence for Liverpool and from thence to
Canton, China.
December 14th ~ Martha SHIVERS, wife of John, deceased.
December 19th ~ Hannah ANDREWS, daughter of Peter ANDREWS, deceased, of
Philadelphia Meeting, tho not in membership with Friends.
December 21st ~ Ira ALLEN expects to remove to ye neighborhood of Lake
Ontario near Buffalo.
December 24th ~ Two story brick house and lot, late Joseph MICKLE's of
Newton, and late occupied by Elias D. WOODRUFF, was sold at vendue by Hugh
HOLLINGSHEAD, Executor, of said Joseph MICKLE, and bid off to Abel CLEMENT of
Newton for $2,700.00.
December 29th ~ Sarah REEVES [REEVE] widow of Joseph, and formerly widow of
Job WHITALL, and daughter of John GILL, Sr. of Haddonfield, deceased this
a.m., aged 73 years 7 months 1 day. Buried Woodbury Friends Burial Ground.
