January 8th ~ John G. WHITALL and Tacy WOOD [Tracy~?], daughter of Marmaduke
WOOD, married last night.
January 9th ~ Received a bundle of ½ pound books and pamphlets from my
esteemed Friend Joseph CLARK of Philadelphia by hand of Samuel TONKIN.
February 8th ~ Thomas RICHARDS and wife, Mary, late Mary TOMLIN and formerly
Mary COOPER, here to lodge.
February 16th ~ Committee for Female School med ye p.m. and agreed to employ
Sarah WEST in ye upper school, and Phoebe WILLIAMS in ye lower school.
February 25th ~ Visited Deptford Free School, 52 scholars of whom 45 are
writers, viz: 40 boys and 5 girls.
February 27th ~ Duncan CAMPBELL, deceased 10th ult.
February 28th ~ Richard MATLOCK [MATLACK] deceased ye morning of typus [sic]
which has spread far and near. Many deceased about CHEW's Landing, Mount
Ephraim, Camden, etc.
March 6th ~ William MATLOCK's wife, near Gloucester, deceased.
March 9th ~ At a meeting 7 p.m. at John S. WHITALL's of a few of the
inhabitants of Woodbury, viz: John REEVE [REEVES], Nathaniel TODD, John S.
WHITALL, James B. CALDWELL, Charles OGDEN, Moreton [Morton] STILLE, Thomas
SAUNDERS [SANDERS] and Samuel MICKLE agreed to recommend by an address to
Town Meeting tomorrow an Association for Suppression of Vice and Immorality.
March 10th ~ Town Meeting appointed a committee of about 50 residents in ye
several parts of township on ye above mentioned service.
March 13th ~ Edward CARPENTER, deceased of typus [sic] fever.
March 15th ~ Robert CORREY's wife interred in Presbyterians ground.
March 15th ~ Paul TROTH's wife interred at Haddonfield.
March 16th ~ Joseph HUGG's wife, Deborah, late deceased from an overdose of
Laudanum, as did the Widow HILLMAN who lived at Little Timber Creek Bridge
Tavern.
March 17th ~ Our Chief Justice KIRKPATRICK from New Brunswick attending our
court this week. Lawyers, etc., are therefore on good behavior.
March 27th ~ Samuel ASHCRAFT and Mullica HILL interred today, died of typus
[sic] fever.
March 27th ~ Thomas WILSON, deceased ye p.m.
March 31st ~ Joseph EASTLACK's wife, late Hannah KAIGHN, formerly a housemate
in our young days, deceased of typus fever. Joseph EASTLACK born 7th month
28th day 1738, OS [Old Style date] and his wife born 2nd month, or April 21,
1741, OS. [May 2, 1741 New Style ~ ?]
April 11th ~ Abijah COLLINS interred in Friends Burial Ground Woodbury, today.
April 20th ~ Heard that Doctor Benjamin RUSH of Philadelphia deceased
yesterday night of Typus fever. An ancient and useful man in his time.
April 28th ~ Heard that Phineas LORD deceased this morning.
May 3rd ~ Heard of Jeremiah ELFRETH's wife's decease.
May 6th ~ James M. WHITALL, son of James and Rebecca, deceased.
May 8th ~ Samuel WEBSTER, Sr., deceased.
May 19th ~ Bought a WILKIN's patent fire place in Philadelphia.
May 27th ~ Haddon HOPKINS deceased of Typus fever.
June 8th ~ Cousin Amos COOPER deceased of Typus fever.
August 6th ~ Went with James SAUNDERS and his son, Isaac, fishing at Woodbury
Dam, very poor success. I caught but three small oldwives. Have not been
fishing since I fished at Egg Harbour when I caught two sheepshead, a year or
two before I married.
August 15th ~ Cooper PAUL deceased today.
August 30th ~ Sarah LORD, widow of Constantine LORD, deceased today in the
76th year of her age.
September 14th ~ James [or Jason] SPRINGER deceased last night.
September 23rd ~ John SHARP, Sr. deceased.
October 4th ~ Doctor WEAVER deceased last week.
October 4th ~ Nicholas WALN, Philadelphia, deceased 29th ult. In his 72nd
year.
October 12th ~ Cousin Joseph GLOVER deceased last night.
October 25th ~ Edward BRADWAY deceased.
November 4th ~ Doctor Samuel HOPKINS drew a double tooth.
November 17th ~ Joseph EASTLACK, in his 76th year, and member of Friends
Society, married today Mary __________ of about 30 years. "Let him that
thinks he stands take heed lest he fall."
December 6th ~ Peter CRIM deceased this morning.
December 22nd ~ Spent most of ye evening at Court House to hear ye winding up
of a Trial respecting a dead Whale which floated on shore at Absecom Beach,
the trial commenced and Jury sitting from ye 15th inst.
