Greeting to all from the sunny and sultry Ards peninsula!
With the approval of our Listowner I would just like to bring to your
attention the following:-
UPPER ARDS HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The 2001 edition of the Society Journal is now available and for anyone with
an interest in this area of the Barony of Upper Ards, this is a must! The
contents are as follows:-
1. Secretary's Report 1999/2000 - Information on Society Talks Programme,
and matters of
general interest in the Upper Ards.
2. Obituary of Marjorie ELLIOTT, President of U.A.H.S.
3. 'Here the Wolf was lost' - Article on maritime burial records in
Portaferry from the 18th. century onwards.
4. 'Home by Half the Town' - Reminisences of the 1950's; people and places
around Ballycaranbeg in the Parish of Ardkeen.
5. Photograph, with names, of 14 members of the GILMORE family outside their
Forge at Rubane Corner, Parish of St. Andrew's c.1895.
6. 'The Civil Parish of Castleboy & the Manor of Cloughy' - Part 4 of a
superbly detailed series comprising local and family history information, by
the present Society President, Amy ANDERSON.
7. 'Sink the Bismark' - Local man Tony BYERS who served on H.M.S. Rodney in
W.W.II, writes on his part in the naval action that led to the sinking of
the great German Battleship.
8. 'The Great Unveiling' - Article and colour photographs of the U.A.H.S.
'Millenium Project', the sundial erected on Portaferry Market House.
9. Three pages of colour photographs depicting the changing face of
Portaferry.
10. 'The ECHLIN Family of County Dublin (1727-1799) - The first part of
three articles by Eugene COYLE of the Skerries Historical Society, Co.
Dublin. The ECHLIN'S had strong links with the Ards peninsula.
11. 'The Journal of Thomas McCARRIE' - Part 9 of the reminicenses of a
Portaferry Photographer in the 1920's.
12. Photograph, with names, of St. Patrick's Portaferry Catholic Boy Scouts
1964.
13. 'Imprisoned in Fort George' - Background information on the 1798
Rebellion and an unpublished letter of the Rev. Dr. William Steel DICKSON a
United Irishman.
14. Extracts from the Newtownards Chronicle & Co. Down Observer from July
1900 to June 1901.
15. Part 5 of a series on lectures on local history given by Ted GRIFFITHS
in Portaferry 25 years ago.
16. Index to Volumes 20-24 of the Journal, compiled by Amy ANDERSON.
17. Back cover - Photographs of Northern Ireland Vintage Ploughing at Tara,
Parish of Witter, in October 2000.
