Quote of the Day -- 01 May 2003
"I think, for the rest of my life, I shall refrain from looking up
things. It is the most ravenous time-snatcher I know. You pull one
book from the shelf, which carries a hint or a reference that sends
you posthaste to another book, and that to successive others. It is
incredible, the number of books you hopefully open and disappointedly
close, only to take down another with the same result." -- Carolyn
Wells in "The Rest of My Life," 1937

Ravenous Time-Snatcher or Rewarding Pastime?

Carolyn Wells (1862-1942), author of today's quote, is known to have
been a voracious reader, a librarian, and an author of over 170 books,
including mysteries and detective stories, humorous writings, books of
verse, nonsense tales, and children's books.

Although Carolyn is not known to have been a genealogist, her comments
on "looking up things" makes it sound as if she may have dabbled in a
bit of family research and would have certainly benefited from
attending some of the lectures at this year's NGS Conference in
Pittsburgh <g>.

Following are just a few examples of lectures that would help Carolyn
solve her research problem and change her ravenous time-snatcher into
a rewarding pastime:

W126, "Off the Beaten Path: Unusual Sources for Research," Tony
Burroughs, FUGA: Get out of the genealogy library to add spice, fun,
and interest to our life and research. There are conferences, museums,
and other institutions and events in the disciplines outside of
genealogy that will spark your research.

W130, "It's in Black and White: Using Newspapers to Enhance
Genealogical Research," Linda Woodward Geiger CGRS, CGL: Learn how
newspapers can be outstanding resources for historical and
socio-economic background material for fleshing out your family
history. You will also learn how to ferret out those often hidden
resources.

W139, "Buried Treasure: Lost in Print," Wendy Bebout Elliott PHD,
FUGA: Examples demonstrate how to locate records when the research
objective's name does not appear in the index. This discussion
includes various indexing methods developed by early clerks and
recorders.

F309, "In a Rut? 7 Ways to Jumpstart Your Research," Elizabeth Shown
Mills CG, CGL, FUGA, FNGS, FASG: Stuck? It happens to everybody. So
how do really successful genealogists "prime their pumps" when their
wells seem to go dry? This session offers both sources and methods to
recharge your batteries when you think both you can your opportunities
are totally exhausted.

S411, "There Must Be Something in Print: Effective Research in
Secondary Sources," Henry B. Hoff CG, FASG: Experience often tells us
there must be something already compiled on an individual or a family.
This lecture discusses some of the methods and sources for finding
these compiled accounts.

It's too late for Carolyn to enhance her research skills by attending
an NGS Conference but the time is right for the rest of us. Check out
the program schedule at http://www.eshow2000.com/ngs/

See you in Pittsburgh! -Carla Ridenour,

NGS Conference in the States
:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:

Countdown to Pittsburgh!
28-31 May 2003

The NGS Annual Conference in the States, Member Meeting and Exhibit
Show is just a few weeks away! NGS is making a number of arrangements
for low cost hotels in the area as an alternative to the sold out
Westin. In addition, the Omni and Ramada Inns, both within walking
distance of the David Lawrence Convention Center, still have a few
rooms left.

Sure to be a big hit at the conference is the launch of the "Family
Papers Collection at NGS." During exhibit hours, anyone may bring
their family papers, such as a Bible record, military discharge
papers, etc. to the NGS Booth where they will be professionally
scanned for future generations. Each donor will receive a CD and case
with the scanned materials at no charge to take home!

Can't spend four days at the conference? A one-day registration may be
a good option, and still chock-full of lectures for all interest
levels and skills in family history and genealogy. Visit the e-show
site for the NGS Conference now for more information. See
http://www.eshow2000.com/ngs/

Have you checked the airline deals lately? Reduced ticket prices can
help make your conference experience very affordable and NGS will make
it memorable too!

National Archives Seeks Public Comments On The Requirements Document
For The Electronic Records Archives

On Friday, April 18, 2003, the National Archives and Records
Administration released a Federal Register Notice seeking public
comment on the Draft Requirements Document currently in development
that specifies at a high level the capabilities of the Electronic
Records Archives (ERA) system. The National Archives seeks comments on
whether the requirements for ERA are complete, comprehensive,
consistent, and understandable.

The Electronic Records Archives will be a comprehensive, systematic,
and dynamic means for preserving any kind of electronic record, free
from dependence on any specific hardware or software. ERA, when
operational, will make it easy for National Archives customers to find
records they want, and easy for the National Archives to deliver those
records in formats suited to customers' needs.

The Draft ERA Requirements Document may be downloaded from the ERA web
site at:
http://www.archives.gov/electronic_records_archives/

The National Archives is a public trust that plays a key role in
fostering effective and responsible government through management of
the life cycle of records in all three branches of the Federal
Government and by making historically valuable records in the National
Archives and the Presidential Libraries accessible. These records
enable people to inspect for themselves what the government has done,
allow officials and agencies to review their actions, and help
citizens hold them accountable.

To fulfill its mission, the National Archives needs to respond
effectively to the challenge posed by the diversity, complexity, and
enormous volume of electronic records being created today and the
rapidly changing nature of the systems that are used to create them.

The public request for comment on the Draft Requirements Document is
another step in the ERA approach that encourages an early and ongoing
open dialogue with potential system stakeholders to continually
improve the accuracy and completeness of requirements for the ERA
system.

Other user activities conducted thus far include:

· ERA User Conference, College Park, MD, November 8, 2002 - Attendees
provided feedback on the National Archives' plan to preserve, manage,
and access electronic records.

· ERA Dialogue Sessions, Various Locations, February 11-27, 2003 -ERA
user stakeholders across the country provided input on desired ERA
system capabilities.

For additional information about ERA, please visit the ERA web site
at: http://www.archives.gov/electronic_records_archives/

Software Fit for a Genealogist
:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:

GEDMark, Version 1

On April 23rd Progeny Software of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, the creators
of Genelines, Charting Companion, and several other software
tools, announced the release of GEDmark, a free program that marks any
GEDCOM file with the researcher's personal identification.See
http://NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/050103/gedmark.jpg

Many researchers have indicated a reluctance to use GEDCOM as a means
of sharing the results of their efforts for a number of reasons,
principal among these being the loss of ownership.Other concerns are
the inability of others to contact the original researcher should the
information find its way to the web through a third party, in which
case the original researcher also is deprived of the opportunity to
make contact with other researchers who may be able to supply
additional information.

GEDmark is designed to resolve these concerns. The program adds an
additional source to the name of each individual in the GEDCOM file.
The procedure is straightforward. With GEDmark activated an existing
GEDCOM file is selected. The author's information, which can include
name, address, phone, email, Web site URL, and a comment, is then
entered on a form. The last step is to rename the GEDCOM file to
indicate it has been modified. The resulting GEDCOM file will then
have a new source linked to each individual. The source title is the
author's name. A note attached to the source contains the balance of
the information supplied on the GEDmark form. When the GEDCOM file is
imported into another program, the author's information will appear as
a source item for each name that was imported using that GEDCOM file.
I created a small GEDCOM file, GEDmarked it, and then imported it to
several programs. The program worked just as advertised. If you are
using GEDCOM as a means of sharing your data, this program is a must.

The GEDmark program is available with no charge at
http://www.progenysoftware.com/gedmark.html.

Progeny Software offers a wide range of quality genealogy software and
research products, including Genelines, Charting Companion and a
variety of genealogy research databases and software tools. Details
are available on their website at: http://www.progenysoftware.com.

Ulead Digital Image Slideshow Software Now Available for Mac

Ulead Systems, Inc., a leading developer of image and video editing,
3D animation, and DVD authoring software, recently introduced DVD
PictureShow for Mac, a digital image slideshow creation program for
the Macintosh platform.

With an intuitive step-by-step workflow, DVD PictureShow for Mac lets
anyone easily create high-quality, digital image slideshows to watch
on TV or a computer. Within each slideshow, it's easy to assemble,
arrange, rotate and set the interval time between photos. Jazz up
slideshows by adding text, background music and even import images for
menu backgrounds. A variety of theme-based menu templates such as
holiday, vacation, romantic, and business help consumers quickly
create slick looking CDs or DVDs with professional menu navigation for
playback on a TV using a standard DVD player or on a computer using a
CD or DVD drive.

Once the slideshow is created, consumers can preview a project with
the software's DVD remote control emulation. When it's time to burn
the slideshow, the software will automatically detect the recording
device on the computer (CD-R, CD-RW or DVD-R) and burn as requested.

Ulead DVD PictureShow for Mac is available online at
http://www.ulead.com for $29.95 for a downloadable version.
A PC version is also available.

Digital Cameras Expected to Reach Mass-Market Appeal. Do You Own One?

A new technology product is often said to have reached mass-market
appeal after achieving a 22% penetration. Recent reports released
from both PMA Marketing Research and InfoTrends confirm that digital
camera ownership has reached 20% in the U.S., with digital cameras
owned by approximately 23 million U.S. households. This trend is
expected to increase within the coming months with digital camera
becoming a mainstream product.

The following facts concerning the popularity of digital cameras were
posted by Phil Askey of Digital Photo Review, http://www.dpreview.com

* The increased sales of high-resolution models will contribute to
consumer interest in the printing of digital images. Forty percent of
digital cameras sold in 2002 featured 3 megapixels or more.

* Sixteen percent of digital cameras sold in 2002 were purchased as a
replacement for a film camera. If their film camera were to break, 50
percent of households indicated they would replace it with a digital
camera.

* Preservation of memories overtook sending photos by e-mail in 2002
as the top reason for taking pictures with a digital camera.

* Twenty percent of digital images taken in 2002 were printed. The
vast majority of these images were printed via home printers, although
interest in retail printing continued to increase during 2002.

* While the volume of conventional prints made in 2002 declined by
700,000 over the prior year, the volume of digital prints made grew by
1.3 million. Digital images accounted for 6.1 percent of the total
volume of prints made in 2002.

* Following 2002, households with digital cameras indicated their
overall level of picture taking with their film cameras had declined
by 19 percent since the acquisition of a digital model.

* Sales of film rolls and film processing declined by 1 percent and 2
percent respectively during 2002. The projected declines for 2003 are
4 percent and 3 percent respectively. Sales of one-time-use cameras,
however, are expected to continue to grow at a rate of 8 percent.

Reader Feedback Requested

It would be interesting to learn how many UpFront readers already own
a digital camera (and which model), how many are thinking of buying
one, and how many are not interested in using a digital camera. If you
have time, please reply to or .
Thanks! --Carla
