Hi Nancy-Jo
I'm very interested in Martha's Vineyard genealogy and its very colorful
people. If you want to know what kind of books there are out there, go
to www.abebooks.com and key in Martha's Vineyard. You will see many
books on the subject (and at wildly different prices!). I've bought
bunches of books off that site, each for less than $20. My prize was
the autobiography of my cousin Captain George Fred Tilton, got that for
$5.00. Also look for the books by Henry Beetle Hough. He includes many
comments about the locals at the turn of the century. I got a good
physical description of my great-great grandfather Franklin Hammett in
one of his books, plus I found out that a cousin Alvin Flanders was
known as the Onion King of the Island. Another good author is Joseph C.
Allen. If you are interested in the deaf history of the Island, then
you should definitely read Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language by Nora
Ellen Groce. That book is even sold on Amazon.com.
Another thought would be to put http://www.mvgazette.com in your saved
files and check it weekly. This is the online version of the Martha's
Vineyard Gazette newspaper. Especially check out the Gazette Chronicle
section, where the selected editorial archives are, and you can find a
goldmine of information there.
Hope this helps a little.
