Subject: Mecklenburg Surnames: ORR, LEMMOND, JAMISON
Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 17:04:09 EST
I am searching the names ORR, LEMMOND and JAMISON in Mecklenburg County.
ORR:
Donna Johnson's great work (http://www.geocities.com/heartland/hills/1174)
provides much info on the Orrs of Mecklenburg -- descendents of James
"Whistling" Orr, (b. 6-24-1743 in Ireland). He was married twice -- to Sarah
McConnell and to Margaret Jane Lemmond and had six children with each. He
served in the NC line in the Revolution, and I've found numerous deed
transactions in which he was involved. I am very interested in his Ulster and
Scotland origins if anyone has a clue. Also any other details of his life in
Charlotte.
LEMMOND:
William Marr "Billy" Lemmond (b. abt 1700 in Ireland; came to America from
County Antrim about 1730; settled in Rowan County, NC in the early 1750s; was
in Captain Alex Osburn's Militia Company as of October 1757. (From research of
Charles Query Lemmond).
He was married to Margaret Bucannan. Their children were John, William Marr
Jr., Margaret Jane, and Ellen. Margaret Jane (b. 9-6-1758, d. 3-2-1829) was
the second wife of James "Whistling" Orr. Their children were Robert, Sarah
Ann, Elizabeth, Susannah, Joseph Lemmond, and Silas Gilbright Orr Sr.
Silas was married to Mary Flavilla Alexander (Donna Johnson and I are
especially interested in any info on her). Their children were John Garrison
Alexander, James L. Virginius, Joseph Lemmond, Susan E., Jenett Caroline,
Cunningham Miller , and Silas Gilbright Jr. and Robert Harvey L. Orr.
James L. Virginius Orr (b. Sept. 1833, d. 1907) married Maria W. Montieth (b.
March 1828). Their children were Augustus Sylvestor, Jennie, Cunningham
Miller, John Garrison, James Silas Lee Orr (b. 11-1-1862, d. 11-8-1936, my
grandfather).
JAMISON:
John A. Jamison (b. November 1829) and Unknown were my great grandparents.
Their children were Mary, William D., Martha (Mattie) and Sarah Jennie Jamison
(b. 12-4-1865, d. 12-29-1892).
Martha (Mattie) was the wife of Sidney Stillwell, a Charlotte grocer. William
D. was the farm superintendent at Thompson Orphanage in Charlotte. His
children were Ernest, Herman, Charles and Reese. Ernest was a dairy farmer in
the Sharon section. Charlie (Shug) was a streetcar and later bus driver. Reese
founded the Jamison Livermush business.
Sarah was my grandmother. She married James Silas Lee Orr on 12-18-84. Their
children were Mary, Sadie, Mazie and James Randolph Orr (b. 12-5-1892, later
re-named James Randolph Jamison though adoption by his Aunt Mattie). My
grandmother Sarah died three weeks after the birth of James, my father.
A man named Arthur Jamison was witness to several deed transactions in
Mecklenburg in 1785, but I have no link established between him and John A.
Jamison. I am aware of several other Jamison families in Charlotte with whom I
have no proven link, but I assume there may be a connection.
Please let me know if I can help you -- or vice versa.
John Watts Jamison
(b. 11-22-30 in Charlotte)
