HI Guys!
I have written my friend who is a professor of linguistics and asked if he
could write a short peice on this topic. I don't know if he will have time to
take this on, but if he does, I will send it to the list. Otherwise, I see no
more purpose to this discussion.
My French teachers were Americans who had lived for YEARS in France and in
various places in France. I suspect that they taught me accurately. My
arguement about the word melange is not based as much on pronunciation as it
is on the way that words hand down linguistically over time. The word melange
IF it is used in Melungeon has not changed enough to be the root. The
spelling is too convenient and too easily jumped on. As I said, I also had a
couple of classes in that VERY difficult subject. Anyone not knowing the
languages well, nor knowing how the structure of the language works get
himself in deep trouble by assuming for instance Mike's Paris/Parisien
example that words in all languages operate the same way that they do in
English.
Again, if my friend writes I will send it on. Don't look for anything soon
however, as he is a busy man. I do NOT believe that melange is the root word
of Melungeon.
