It's not written in stone that people would have heard it pronounced
correctly like MAYlawnge (melange). They very well could have heard or
said it differently. There aren't any ironclad rules that would deem
this as impossible. Pronunciations of words can change over places and
times. People in Massachusetts speak differently than people in
Mississippi just as folks in 1600 spoke differently than people in 2000.
