Note 1. The Myrtle didn't have an Official Number in 1855 but by
1858-60, one had been issued.
Note 2. The third brother, Robert Meldrum, was shown as master of the
Ludworth in the 1871 census.
Robert Meldrum was the captain of the George Gowland in the 1881 census.
Here is the barebones information from the Vessels Enumerated fiche.
George Gowland, enumerated Great Yarmouth, Official Number: 81,620,
Master: Robert Meldrum, Tonnage 374.
Desc: Screw Steamer Between Hpool and London.
It appears that many of the ships were colliers, probably trading
in the Durham coalfield to London trade. A Google search turned up
"George Gowland from Sunderland was one of the directors of the London
Steam Collier and Coal Company which owned Thornley and Ludworth
Colliers in 1866."
